Hand held GPS?

Just make sure there is a cell tower in the middle of the mountains or desert or wherever you are.

Most gps apps do not need a cell signal for location. It is only needed for updating the maps. I have used old phones with no cell plan to log hikes. They work great. The biggest problem with cell phones is the small battery life and no way to replace batteries if they do die.

Phones can be a good option if you don't do a lot of collecting. Most will get you within 10 feet. If you cant find your tree then it must not have been all that memorable to begin with.

If you are going to do more than a little bit of collecting a dedicated gps is the way to go.

Indeed battery is a problem with phones,
And when you where gloves its just annoying to use the touchscreen. Hate that.
I love google maps though.
