Hackberry #2

I've shared this hackberry in other threads before, but never created one for it. After pruning and repotting. This is the earliest I've ever seen the hackberry bud out, it's usually one of the last to go. My big one is still dormant.
You would think all this time in a shallow pot the roots would be better, these like to form mats. I may do some cuttings so I can root graft someday, but I'm so bad at cuttings...

Try to keep some the roots for root cuttings when you do rootwork.

What do I do with root cuttings? They will grow as if they were a branch cutting?

Yes works the same as a regular cutting i think only you already have roots but no shoots i just planted a big root from my malus in a pot to do the same

Yes, like defra mentioned. You'll have something you could thread graft or approach gtaft roots from later. It's what I like about Elm and Hackberry.

Thanks, will do that next time with the roots. I just hope they are easier than cuttings, as I never have the time to do it right.

You have so many beautiful trees, sister!
One of the advantages of the root cutting is its bark characteristic. To me and I believe many people will consider the bark is the most important. It is similar to skin admiration in the human.

Do you need to have a decent size root to propagate with root cuttings? How much root are you talking to get started?
I know certain flowers I've grown from root cuttings before but hadn't considered it for trees.

Thank you brother I have never been much of a propagator, but this sounds easier than most, I will certainly try. I just wish I had this info when I cut all those roots away the other day...

I would guess there is a point where small I'd too small or shirt is too short, but I can't tell you what those limits are. However this sprout from last year, I've just been able to identify as a root cutting when I repot teddy it last month. From this thread. I can tell it was not very thick nor long.



Of course for root grafts, you'll want thicker roots for grafting the next year.

I wouldn't go under a 1/8" and I always cut a piece that has feeder roots,you can get multiple cuttings off of one root,I took some elm cuttings a couple seasons ago that had roots larger then a inch and almost all sprouted

Does this work for most species? I'm moving a JM from ground to training pot in the next few weeks so likely to have some decent root off cuts that might be worth trying.

Oh, howd I miss this one? This one's seems to be able to hack it.

My only critiques is the tree is right dominate, feels like it falling over that way. The left bottom branch needs to be more in balance with the right. Also the top left branch next to the apex seems to be compete for dominace a bit. Other then that and the nebari this is a really awesome tree! The Ramification is fantastic. Sorry being so critical and this just what I see in 2d pictures. Love this tree!

Agreed on both points, just waiting for some buds to pop to take the right branch back. Also up top will do some reductions on the top left. Thanks for the critical look, I appreciate!

Can't remember what species of Hack it is... It is beautiful for sure!
