Starting to control it a bit more though. 2019 was heavy, 2020 was heavy, 2021 was mild, 2022 is super mild.

Even though it's a bad fungus, I have to admit that the fruiting bodies have a wonderful texture. Velvet in appearance and feel.

First P. Rigida popping up!
Thanks @RJG2 !

Those are from last year.

Public service announcement: A public apology to @Kadebe because I promised him a couple scots pine seedlings. The ones I had for him have died during the last frost, because I forgot to put them in a good safe place and just left them out on the table. So I'm growing some more to make it up to him. These will be better than the ones I initially wanted to send, so please forgive me. I'll try to make it right!

Yay, they're sprouting!

I didn't have time to do the ones I saved. Maybe next year.

No problem... Already forgiven :)

A hawthorn stump and an oak.

Ponderosa are a mess. But for a "slow" species they seem to be doing pretty average.

Together with itoigawa the communis are the first junipers to start spring growth.

No spring nutrients for the pines this year. See if those needles start reducing.

This tray is an experiment to see if I'm able to cultivate moss. Seems to be working. On top of the metal mesh I put my juniper motherplant, so it gets watered daily. Filling out nicely.
I'll be doing more trays like this with different kinds of moss.

Ponderosa seedling cutting year 2.

Uncut. I wonder why people call them slow growing. Sure, they extend less but they seem to fatten up rapidly.

Looks like it worked. Another lesson learnt: select healthy scions or don't even try.
I used a couple scions from weaker blaauw plants from a nursery plagued by spider mites. Those plants have been treated last fall and were in the recovery phase. Because I lopped off a bunch of branches I figured to make good use of those and used a couple for scions.
The result is that 1 out of every 5 took, whereas from a healthy donor it was 5 out of 6.

Pine approach grafts from last fall seem to be healing nicely, I'll take a couple pictures next time. Had two flukes as well because the cuts weren't deep enough. But that's how we learn.

Again with the percolation issues on two of my scots pines. I wonder why..

Nah just kidding. It's fungus. I know why.
Used this chunk to inoculate some pots that haven't accepted this symbiont.

Cool difference in needle size. Fertilized heavily last spring, this year I used a single little dash of kelp and nothing else.
Now it's power feeding time. Ramping up the levels to get some budding in there.

How are the pitch pine doing?
IMG_20220619_161329.jpg
Pitch pines are doing pretty alright. Every couple of weeks a new one pops up.
Not at the amounts the scots pines on the left do, but that's alright.

These are from last year. Molested and ravaged by birds.

Five year old JRP from seed.

4? 5? Year old longaeva, from seed.

IMG_20220619_161659.jpg
Four year old JRP.

Four or five year old banksiana.

There have been ants all over my spruce for a while now.
Ants mean aphids! But I wasn't able to locate them at a first glance.

Camouflaged well!

Cool! Knocked the bud off of a ponderosa to see if it'll bud down low like other pines do.
It responded with a weak flush of growth.

Scots pine shoots were cut in late august, early september.
The ones with the fungal soil mass have exploded with buds allovadaplace.
