Growing moss

After searching for moss for use,
Found it in the yard on the asphalt.
Handles sun amd normal watering.
Now it spreads itself naturally from June until Christmas.
[ Beginning and end of the rainy season ]

Discovered that some trees like the moss, like our Oxy [ think cocaine cousin ]
often found in the swamps.
So as it builds on the soil, taking a small scissors and trimming down
to the brown. like mowing a lawn.
After 2 weeks the brown regenerates new moss.
So when the moss is too high or dense it is - "mowed "

On other trees, the moss is removed.

For display moss is added.

Moss looks pretty, so a small piece is placed on porous stone or
brick and it covers the stone / brick.
Good Day

Here are two examples of detrimental issues I've experienced that I beleive are caused by too much moss enveloping trunks.

A small European larch which appears to have suffered from root rot (now dead) and a small Dawn Redwood that easily loses its lower trunk bark when cleaned with a small plastic bristle brush. The remaining trunk surface is soft and spongy. Both trees have received the same amount of watering. Generally once per morning during the summer months.

Here’s the sort of moss I can get in my neighborhood on a 15-minute walk, scraping with a putty knife. Most of the houses and sidewalks were built in the 1950s and 1960s.

It has been raining a ton around here, so I’ll let it dry out just a touch before manually shredding it through a coarse screen along with some dried sphagnum moss.

I’ll then sprinkle the moss over prepared trays of fine, slow draining media and keep it wetted in a bright but not sunny location.

This will be my first actively grown moss. Otherwise I’ve collected it like this and then spread the sphagnum-green mix on top of soil in pots.
