Hello all!

I was wondering what is the best way to grow or collect moss for your trees?

Find native moss. A putty knife works well to shave it off what ever its on.
Buy sphagnum moss at store, and chop up.
Grind native moss over chopped up sphagnum, and sprinkle it on a tray of soil, or your potted tree.
I find I have to wait through a winter before its really healthy, you will want to keep it somewhat wet.

In early to mid spring I just go for long walks around the neighborhood and have a plastic bag and a small tool and inspect all the sidewalk cracks and collect the best velvety moss. Go home and make shallow layer of putting soil and start pressing moss onto it and watering everyday till it makes a thick carpet which I place approx two weeks before a show. I also put some directly on my bonsai and grow it out like that but invariably if that moss is to look good that means I'm overwatering the bonsai...

Moss rules.

I haven't had happy trees UNTIL I had happy Moss on top.

Best to grow it on Your media, bricks, or rough concrete.

Thank you all for the tips! This really helps!

Hi,

YouTube abounds with information about moss growing and propagation.

@sorce I think that is post 21 and @Forsoothe! meant the one on the same page but 13 posts later. Very detailed and good info on moss. Never gave it that much thought but appreciate knowledge always.

I went out and collected some sidewalk moss for my first attempt. I was wondering if this is ok and will it spread?

It will meld together. Try to keep it clean over winter (under mulch). You can cut a piece of window screen or porous landscaping cloth to fit the shape under the tree to drape over the top of the moss, but it must allow water to get to the plant. Next spring, use a toothebrush to softly brush away debris from the moss and your back in business!

Watch for sporophytes, the little nodding balls on tiny stems that contain the spores of the next generation for you. They often show up when moss is happy, as in a new home that gets watered more regularly than the sidewalk!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip for winter. I’m excited with this first go!

Stweed, Looks great to me! Keep in mind that the moss covering will retain more soil moisture than open soil. You may want to consider opening up the trunk area to prevent/delay moss growth on the trunk. The Moss Acres website has lots of information on moss ID, care and propagation.

Hello all!
My moss started getting orange spots and I’m not sure what they are. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the help!

Hard to tell from the pictures if it is fungal related or dying patches. To rule out any detrimental chemicals or minerals in your water source you could try using distilled water for awhile to see if things improve.
