GrapeFruit tree

Cool tree! I can't tell - is it grafted? That's unique nebari & trunk for a citrus!

Its the only way I would bring something into my collection now would be roots of some sort quirky. Because I wasn't even actively hunting Kumquat until a convo in my messenger turned to trees. And one got me curious...I stated I have no room for more tropical. He was like...they could winter in your control greenhouse. I was curious and reached out to Jason Schley and sure enough they can.

How big is that beast!?!
Maybe 20’ 6” trunk. I think it’s been a couple months since I went over there and looked at it. I’m thinking this winter/spring I’ll just sawzall down around the roots and knock it into the river. Then boat it up chop it and plant it in a box probably. I’ll have to pull the roots in a little tighter than they are now but how far will have to be determined later. I am thinking less than 2 feet of trunk because it will have at least that much exposed root probably but I won’t know until I get into it! Is there a thread on neagari Where I can learn proportions or is it like literati and “there are no rules”?

I have to talk to Jason one of these days, you aren’t the first person to reference him and I watch/read his content online. I usually talk to Erik Wigart for my local source as he’s only 35-45 minutes away but Schley’s is still less than 3 hours. What amazes me the most though is how unprofessional the smaller bonsai “nurseries” are down here. I’ve made appointments or tried to make appointments at a bunch nearby and they no show, constantly put me off etc. I gave up on them. I’ll only deal with the bigger professionals from now on like Wigart’s, Schley’s, Artisan’s Bonsai, American Bonsai and The Bonsai Supply the last three are on my list because they’re still closer than Jason’s place by almost an hour and have all received positive reviews from people here.

We went to Schley's last summer, out in the middle if nowhere. Kind of park in the woods. We were the only ones there, not even sure it was even open. We walked down a path and Mike there greeted us and told us to just look around. Pretty awesome, even my husband was impressed with the specimen trees. We would have stayed longer, but is was hot as hell and flying home I could only get one small tree. But I would love to go back. I have a thread showing some of the trees there in the outings ect ect forum here if you want to see examples.

I'm in NE Ohio...Jason ships...so not an issue for me. My pyracantha, winged elm,Catlin elm now this kumquat all come from his place. Never an issue with shipping. When I was running a beginners group. If I tagged him he was always so helpful with tropical questions. I really liked that about him. But also his quirky material...which he has some.

Very cool. I love nurseries!

But buying trees sight unseen? Well photos of specific trees I get. But there are probably 1000 Bald cypress trees ready for sale at Wigart’s as various stage prebonsai and 100 ready to go beautiful specimens in various sizes. How do you pick your trees? To be fair I haven’t been to Schley’s site yet with so maybe he has less inventory on hand ready to sell or you only shop what’s available online? Or is he that cool that he knows your tastes and watches for trees for you?

Jason sent me several tree images. The one shared today shows how he shares images. Then I pondered over two. So I got video footage to help me finalize which I wanted. Yeah...above and beyond. I won't brown bag purchase a tree sight unseen. I'm very particular if anyone knows me. 😉

I know right? So much better than buying online. Unfortunately, the only one near me closed last year. You are so lucky to be close to Wigert's although if I was that close, I would have to join a 12 step program for tree addiction.

Price point...and explaining what style tree you want goes a long way. I have never walked into a bonsai nursery to buy a tree.
I wander and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look and look... and look. Lmao. Feels so weird in my head to buy one like that!

Location...I don't have that opportunity. I do have contacts who know me. Know what I like by now...and have reached out even. Tons of images...and video if need be. I usually don't look for a species...but more characteristics of a tree. And a price point. That's how I landed the Gingko. Wasn't looking for a Ginkgo. Cool bark...and fall color was my focus. But for some reason...I can't get an image to load now. I loaded the kumquat earlier. So frustrating.

I can’t go to more than a couple nurseries in a day. I have to see everything. Although I am getting faster as my eye gets better. I did almost an entire 35 acre nonbonsai nursery in one hour just because most plants aren’t at all suitable. I just shot down most of the rows because either not at all bonsai martial or if it was trees it was straight horrible nebari etc. the one tree I got was a pom-pom’d japanese boxwood from the back corner.

I’m sad you don’t get that opportunity. Although I’m surprised. My cousin Gary in Montana runs a nursery. Not bonsai but still. There have to be nurseries up there. You need a trip to FL not for Disney but for trees! Lol

@Trenthany,Whatever fills that void for adding trees is the way to go. I think its helped me to be more selective in my queries. Not a bad thing...I'm quite indecisive...maybe this is actually best for me. I feel blessed by each tree I've added. So don't feel bad for me. Seven years in...I've acquired great contacts. Love my collection. Blessed by each one for sure...and the ones in my circle which made it possible.

Well if you ever need pics of a tree or are looking for something specific I’m all over south Florida pretty often so let me know and I might be able to find it!
