Getting excited about the USNBE!!!

I just got home. Been working wayy too hard lately. 13 Hours today so it may be the weekend before I have time to really check it over. No Gaga this time. Much improvement over last year.

Toodles, Al

Al,

I am greatly encouraged by your cursory assesment. :) I'll look forward to seeing if any other thoughts or critiques occur to you when you have the luxury of time. :) I know how the work thing goes... I have a 13 hour day looming tomorrow & Thursday. ugh. lol

Kisses,

Victrinia

Honestly... I think you nailed it best when you said I was trying too hard my first go around... which is doubtlessly a noob mistake at display... I recall you saying it was like trying to display all your 'best' things at once even when they had no business doing so... that really struck home for me, because as I mulled it over, I found it to be true. I kept that wisdom in mind when I designed this, and for that I thank you dearly...

Gratefully,

Victrinia

Vic your work is fantastic as usual and is made all the more beautiful by your kind and humble spirit. Thanks for sharing!

I'll second that!

And I love this tree and pot too Victrinia! Good Luck at the exhibit!

Vic, Congrats and I look forward to seeing another one of your trees at the show.

Dave

Thank you gents... I am very eager to hear from people about the event... I REALLY wish I was going... Bill was very kind last time and took a photo of my tree in display (probably because I begged.... lol)... so I could at least see it in place. I'll have to beg again...

Warmly,

Victrinia

Very nice display. For some strange reason, the tree reminds me of those created by Bill Valavanis. No wonder that Bill likes it. It is his kind of tree, and I obviously mean that as a compliment. But you guys have to figure out what do I mean by that....Any thoughts?

Is it a shimpaku, or some kind of cypress (Tsukomo)?

The pot works very well, by the way.

I am very proud of you, Vic!

P.S.: just saw on your blog that it's a Tsukomo.

Forgot to add something: the more I looked at it, the more I realized that there is something "strange" about it. Well, when I say "strange", I mean that from the point of view of a Californian bonsai enthusiast. I call it strange because I don't see this too often here, when a conifer bonsai is exhibited.

Thank you Attila for those amusing reads... lol I am not sure what's strange about it... maybe it's because it's a conifer with a distinctly deciduous build?? What would be interesting to note, in a place very much filled with ancient conifers... is that it's not impossible to see a very deciduous form on a conifer... The use of hostas and sedum with with it as a companion wouldn't be strange here either. But our landscapes are also greatly different... so I am not surprised by your thoughts on it.

Daniel has often pointed out, and which I also hold to, that we are limited by our visual experiance at times. What we have seen influences what we create, unless it's a purely sculptural expression (not unlike those done by Masahiko Kimura). This is a valid image for me... so there is no strangeness in it for me... but I am glad you enjoyed it even as it challenges your expectations. I'd love for you to expound on that sense of strangeness if you are so inclined. I think it's good food for thought for all.

I am glad you are proud, as one who has watched my progress over years. That's a great compliment, and I appreciate it.

Kindest regards,

Victrinia

Ha!
I knew I will make you curious, by me being rather vague.
The explanation is simple: here in Southern California you rarely see conifers in a bonsai exhibit, that don't have the slightest trace of deadwood (jin, shari, or what not). It is almost compulsory, or else you will be branded and excommunicated. How dare you!!? Are you crazy?

Anyway, the tree looks good the way it is. And it's a Tsukomo, which means that it takes forever to grow anything on that trunk, including potential candidates for deadwood. May be in the distant future, if you get rid of that branch, then you can have a jin-shari combination on it.

BTW, this is one of the features that makes the tree sort of Bill Valavanis-esque...amongst a few others (sorry Bill, I'm just teasing :))

HA!

And you would be wrong.... sometimes deadwood is like your favorite spots on the body of your lover... to only be seen on intimate inspection. There are several areas of deadwood not visible in this image. lol

Hope its not dead wood! Eric....you have some splainin to do...

Smoke...

You are incorrigible... Trust me when I say the exposed wood is most certainly dead in that tree... and the body of my lover is deeply appreciated and without lack. :p

And Dario..... Shame on you.... encouraging him.... :p

Yours in amusement,

Victrinia

 You toss him that and expect anything else??????????? Come now you aren't that naive.

Eric, save yourself, and min wax has a couple of products:p

Sorry, it was this or roll on the floor too.:o

I would counter that anyone who can't appreciate the subtlety of my comment is suffering a world of hurt to begin with... which has nothing to do with being naive.

Here's a sneak peek at what I'm sending... It's not totally finished, but I couldn't resist showing off the beautiful stand Jerry Braswell made for me!! Love it!!

Enjoy!

Victrinia

PS.... Smoke... be kind... lol love yah brother. ;)

Would it be fair to talk about this as presented here, without seeing what you percieve as finished?

....or should we wait until it is presented as finished?

Also, is your piece being judged in any way, or is it just a piece from Washington State on display? I'm kinda looking at context as to how detailed one would get with displaying a piece. So many points of view and so much subjectivity.

Ok, talked myself out of that......

I like it and the white pot as well. Having two trees accepted is quite and honor, looking forward to your show stoppers in 2014.

On a separate note, are tickets available at the door or do they need to be preordered?

Daily tickets to the US National Bonsai Exhibition are available at the door for $15 which includes the four demonstrations, bonsai exhibition and huge sales area.
