European White Birch

I heard the same but I continue to see examples that lead me to believe otherwise.
I didn't just hear it in my case.
Had a tree do it. It was a nice trunk so it was very disappointing.

Birch bonsai are pretty rare while birch occurs in the wild in both North America and Europe

It's such an iconic and striking tree, there has to be a reason it isnt more common as bonsai.

I wish it wasn't the case, believe me

Oh I believe you. But I also think it’s not just issues that cause them to not be bonsai. I read and was told that Siberian elm is a horrible candidate for Bonsai. Because it tends to drop branches easily. I have yet to experience this. I suppose I will reevaluate when it does. In terms of this birch, I’m feeling awfully optimistic about its future. and considering that deciduous trees struggle generally for me, I’m happy to give something a try, even if it ends up failing in the long term. My high desert environment can be a bit of a doozy for deciduous.

This tree has been quite the grower. After reading @MACH5 Birch post I’ve tried following suit. This flush is from its third cutback. As Sergio has suggested I’ve let the growth go to around 7-9 leaves them trimmed to 2-3. I just trimmed the apex about a week ago. It has only responded with strong new shoots and has reliably back budded at every group of leaves I’ve cut back to. So far so good!

I am about to get a river birch from the nursery in October. I have a couple of questions I hope you guys can answer:

1) When should I think about repotting it into a box like the tree at the start of the thread?

2) What soil mixture should I put together for it?

3) Is there a reputable site where I can get general care information on river birch?

@cbrodbe2 It would be best to start your own thread.

I don’t have experience with River Birch, but everything I’ve read about that variety in particular is the sudden death of branches and the entire plant that seems to take place. A google search will yield multiple people’s results, on this forum in particular, asking very much the same questions you’ve asked on River birch.

I really like the idea of birch as a bonsai subject. It naturally grows in a slightly jagged pattern and really lends itself strongly to upright styles. There’s a landscaping nursery near me that keeps silver birch in the full sun year round. My little birch wouldn’t be able to handle summer heat like these big ones.

Repotted this tree in spring. Gave me the opportunity to remove some more large roots in favor of feeders. Put in this taizan (I think?) pot. Leaves are smaller than last year for sure. Growth is healthy. I will do a hard cutback in a few weeks to a month to try and induce backbudding. May need to thread graft at some point to fill jarring gaps.

When you do hard cutbacks in the summer, is it always to a leaf/shoot?

This’ll only be my second year of cutbacks. But I will def be cutting back to leaf pairs or basal buds. Last year it forced some trunk back budding and I hope the same happens this year.

I still really like this tree. I see something that I would carefully mention to a bonsai guy who is way smarter and more experienced than I...the apex on both trunks seem to be sweeping in the same direction and could I suggest that the taller of the trunks be chopped at the first big branch on the right to get movement on that apex going in the opposite direction?

I don’t mind you commenting August! I wouldn’t post if I didn’t want people to chime in. Currently I’m most worried about attaining branching in the correct location generally. Eventually I will wire things out to balance the apex more. Maybe this fall. With that said though, I am more of a harmony type of guy, rather than playing with the tension that opposing apex brings to a design.

This one is going to be really nice. Its rare to see a tree that came from a big box store turn into something nice. I actually love White Birch for bonsai and have only had success with them. Ive been looking to collect more.
