Ebihara maples

Repotted one of the maples today, pulling it off the board. I’m pretty happy with the progress. Qualitatively, it looks good (but I wish I had taken measurements).

Very few roots on the bottom to eliminate.

Remove roots that are too high. Remove or staple any crossing roots. Cut back any that are too large. Encourage radial growing lateral surface roots. That’s what encourages the basal flare.

Then back in the Anderson flat - no board this time. I planted it a bit higher this time

Some years ago on YouTube there was a long video of Mr. Ebihara moving a branch this way. It was in black and white, don’t remember the date. I still remember how stunned I was to see it.

The goal of this thread is simple - I recognize that Ebihara has grown vastly better trees than me or anyone else that I’ve seen. I like to learn from those who came before me who have proven results by attempting to replicate what they’ve done. Some, not all, of the way Ebihara went about his business is extremely well documented. So, I’ve gone back to the various Kinbon articles in which his work is documented and I’ve spoken to individuals who’ve met and/or worked with Ebihara and tried learn from them. I’ve summarized what I’ve found here and attempted, by way of examples in my own garden, to replicate some of his techniques. Do the techniques work? In my opinion, there is no doubt - Ebihara’s work speaks for itself. Was I able to do it? That’s a different matter - it’s a bit of an experiment for me and a very public one. We’ll all get to see together.

Can you please tell (if possible), which Kinbon magazine issues have got Ebihara work (I have noted so far May 2001). Any other Kinbon magazines have got his work mentioned please?

I forgot where I saved that last picture (blue tint) from or when it was taken, but you can see quite a bit of change in the nebari despite the structure and branches of the tree being relatively stable
