Dormancy question

Dallas Bonsai had a clearance sale recently and I bought one of their 3 tree bundles. The zelkova is dormant and went into cold storage in the garage. The ficus is under the grow lights. It was a little stressed from shipping, so it's adjusting to the new environment.

My question is about this bougainvillea; it's dormant and my garage is too cold for cold storage in Idaho. It can get down to almost freezing. January wasn't the best time to purchase this species, but clearance is clearance. What is my best course of action? I've got decent grow lights and a heating pad. Is it possible/advisable to bring it out of dormancy in doors? Is rolling the dice in the garage to continue dormant safer?

My bougies come in once the nighttime lows go below 50 degrees. I have a southern exposure and additional grow lights. I bet it will start leafing out in a few weeks or so after being indoors. Never used a heating pad. Rolling the dice in your garage in Idaho, is sure to be a losing bet.

Interesting, I've stayed away from bougainvillea in Chicago, but it sounds like according to the posters here they do ok indoors in winter? How do they respond to being brought in? Do they actually grow indoors or just survive?

Same as everything else I reckon, depends on the lights.
I think @Cadillactaste grows under lights.

Never noted raging growth at THG, but they aren't housed for raging growth in winter. No additional light.

First year in...No grow light. I ended up with ugly leggy growth. Added the grow cart. And I was able to develop my bougainvillea cascade rather quickly. 18 hours of light...on a timer. It got pushed out of the grow cart when I brought in a chunky monkey tigerbark. I am using a new light system. 12 hours of light on a built in timer. It won't work plugged into my wall timer. Which sucks. So I'm not seeing the growth in the past on the bougainvillea. But I'm more in the refinement stage. So it's not really overly bothersome. But...it's not pushing like it used to. But...I've kept the leggy growth at bay. That's all I can say with the new system this year on it. I'm on the wall if I want to buy another light system and try to make it happier. But it's not dying either.

I will put it out there...These are what I'm currently using on the bougainvillea. It's not as happy as under my grow cart. I am thinking it's because it is only a 12 hour built in timer. And not seeing the length of time it usually seen under the grow cart. Just my thoughts on it. Nothing else has changed.

Mine respond by tossing all their leaves, bracts to the floor. Except for the one I got this fall from @Zach Smith. That one didn't drop a leaf and is currently starting to bloom. They pout for a while, but eventually start to leaf out again. I do use LED lights and they do get natural sunlight also.

@Vali and anyone else who cares, you see....

How many times do I have to check back with caddie about a bougie growing under lights before I just know Bougie grow under lights?

Seems I know a bougie grows under lights without ever having done it before!

It's the people that can't figure out how information works that I'm weary of taking information from.

At the end of the day, it's not about trees, as much as it is about people and information, applied to trees.

Thanks for the info. I have a similar indoor setup for my figs. In case it is useful to you, instead of timers I use wemo plugs. They are super easy to set up and you can control them with an app: https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Enabled-Google-Assistant-HomeKit/dp/B01NBI0A6R/

I'm sorry if I've offended you. I appreciate all of the valuable information people share here, and I take it all seriously. My impression up until now (from people who have firsthand experience) has been that bougies struggle indoors and I'd rather stick to trees that thrive not just survive, but I'm happy to hear they may be back on the table, especially since I already have the right setup.

Not at all friend!

MY apologies for dragging other "points" onto this thread.

But it matters for the benefit of the community.

Bringing this to light to hush the ....

"Experience is the only thing that matters"

Crowd, especially since the "experienced crowd" is already poisoned by "doing bonsai the same for 40 years"... Blah...

Not catagorizing anyone.

But these catagories must be known in order to avoid falling into their traps!

We can't build with unfired bricks.
The weakest link...etc.

We must strive to stay above these things.

Modest!

That's the textbook problem solving and designing that can't easily be followed I was talking about in the other thread!

Cross thread points.

They call Cross thread points on the Harley forum, cuz of boots and such....

Ours should be called thread graft points!

The built in timer on the light. Won't accept any other timer. I've a great greenhouse timer. Plugs into the wall...set. Forget about it. Plug the new light into that timer to work turning on and off. It won't come back on without having the button pushed to turn it on. Same way if the power goes out. I get the entire concept of those. My brother in law lives by them actually. But this light set up...the new one for the bougainvillea. Yeah...it's the way it's wired.

Ah, I see. I have a fan that's the same way so I just leave it on all the time, but obviously you can't do that with the light.

Lovely tree by the way, that alone is enough to convince me to try and keep one.
