Corkbark JBP, ‘Taihei’

Great thread! The density you’ve managed to achieve - highlighted by the side by side - is impressive.

I guess I don’t quite understand your pruning techniques entirely. You said it doesn’t respond well to summer decandling.

So do you prune only in the spring and fall?

The angle a branch leaves the trunk should be a constant theme in most trees, at least in my mind. The lowest branches should be a little lower, the upper branches should be a little above the plane the lower branch comes of the trunk. But the basic theme the differences in the angle should only be incrementally different between the upper and lower parts of the tree. In the 2019 photos, the angle of the first branch was changed to look more sharply below horizontal. The angle of the upper branches are so different that they don't blend, like the upper and lower parts are 2 different trees. I'd bring the lower branch angle up just a bit, to harmonize better with the upper branches.

I would also allow all the branches to lengthen and expose the areas where they join the trunk. Especially if the corking effect has begun spreading out onto the branches. You have done an excellent job of keeping foliage in ''tight'', but perhaps, especially with the longer needles, letting the whole tree get looser, might harmonize the design better.

These are just my thoughts. Your tree is better looking than any of the corkers I have. I only offer these as suggestions. I do not claim to be an authority on pines, or cork bark pines.

Was going to post something similar to what Leo just did - I like the lower branch but feel like perhaps it is bent down too sharply. Have you tried a virt where that branch is made more horizontal?

Interesting variety - not really what I think of when I see "corkbark jbp" with the wild bark plates, but attractive.

I hadn’t noticed Leo’s point before, but I do see where he’s coming from. However, instead of raising the bottom branch, I’d bring down the top branch angles ever so slightly.

But this tree is 1000x better than any of mine so my .02 aren’t worth much! ?

I agree with this Leo, and the first branch is a bit exaggerated, and will be allowed to drift back up over time. I’ve also been pulling the next branch up on the left side down a bit, maybe trying to find a little balance.

Are there any experienced grafters in your club, Brian? It'd solve a lot of problems!

I like how it's getting a bit curvy, bark is awesome. Foliage a fine green. I don't think having a bit of sparse branching along the trunk of a fine cork JBP is that odd....it's about the bark!

….any thoughts about improving the roots in some manner? :)

Looks like you did a good job while you ignored it!?!?;):D:D:D:D:D:D Of course, I'm not a bonsai snob yet, just dabbling....:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Niuce!!:D

Time for a little maintenance on this one.

Removed dead needles, pulled some new needles to balance it out, pruned strong shoots, and back to pairs...and a little wire.

Should be good for another year of neglect.😜

Looking better and better. The bark texture is starting to bring movement to the straight section. There may be a dragon emerging yet.

A quick update after removing dead needles. I’ll further thin it out in the spring.

I love the progress on this one @Brian Van Fleet ! It's also great that the graft is almost unnoticeable. Dave definitely knows his stuff. I have a Taihei and a couple of Ondae cultivars from him that I will definitely keep. Going to try my best to keep a memento of his... RIP Dave!

Yes, kinda feel obligated to keep it now for sure. Let’s see yours when you get a chance. Always like seeing other corkers.
