Contests for the colder months

I'm down for some kind of xmas tree contest also. I'm pretty sure all I see around me are the dwarf alberta spruces... is that what we're talking about?

Copyright issues? Send a pic if you can

I've got some Pieris and Hibiscus that for sure said: "Unlicensed Propagation Prohibited" on the tags. Which I'm sure is basically unenforceable unless you're selling hundreds of props commercially.

There are varieties which have copyrights on them by breeders...

You can try breeding your own species and whatnot. Im going to experiment with this with tomatos this spring.

I agree!
shall we say:
-submit tree before the 25th?(pics of point of purchase at retailer would be fun)
——- I saw Italian rock pines at Target that came with A string of battery operated mini lights for the tree!
-pics of before and after if immediately worked/ re-potted?
- revisit the trees this time or before next x-mas?
Sounds pretty fun👍

Thanks for putting the contest idea together, I didn’t feel confident enough to do it 😐

Just want to clear something up.
So around Christmas next year is the judging date. Does that mean we can wait to do the normal spring work if we want? As long as we buy our grocery store tree before Christmas Day this year. Don’t want to stress a tree that might already be dead 😅🤣

How about we will all start our own personal threads under a special contest thread documenting our "Christmas" trees once we get them. We will post a picture when we first get them, and any other pictures/information on our trees well being and the process of their new lives as a bonsai (basically our work on our trees). We have now until Christmas to get our trees, and whatever ideas you guys would like to add go ahead! The judging shall be next Christmas. We'll talk more about the contest tommorow and we will make it official! This will be so fun and I'm very excited.

Perfect. Sounds like a plan!

I have a couple suggestions for guidelines.

The tree should be sold with some sort of holiday looking decorations. Nothing fancy needed just something that makes it different from a tree in a normal pot. Even shiny foil on the pot would be just fine.
Also like mentioned before rosemary would work, or any other species you can find I a grocery store that you want to work with
I think the tree should be bought in person as part of the rules, not online through a store. With a quick look around, I saw the Walmart app sells a bunch of stuff but it gets shipped from completely different stores that don’t sell groceries (But buying from Walmart in person would be fine because they do sell groceries)
I don’t want to sound like worried about making strict rules or anything. Just wanted to make sure we were all on a similar page with how we start out.

what does everyone think about these ideas?

Sounds good to me 👍

As long as we pick them up from some kind of grocery store, hardware store, etc. Any type of pines, anything that they would have out specifically for Christmas.

Is it cheating to go to the lot and buy a precut? Is living till next Christmas required?

In all seriousness, what if any species limitations/recommendations?

I don’t think the species matters as long at they are trying to sell it because of the holiday.

Part of the challenge I think is trying to keep these trees alive when we go to manipulate them (in just 1 year) Normally with plants from a sketchy source the 1st year is always used to regain vigor right? It will add to the challenge to keep it alive :)
But if your dead tree is better looking then mine but mine is living... I don’t think I should win. I think I would have a pretty bad tree to lose to a dead one

Well I ask it more because for me personally I'd rather get something that would be good long term. So I don't want to get something crappy. But I'm new to this so I have no idea what popular commercial species of fir/Spruce works well. However I'm open to the "whatever tf we find" method too.

We should get @Bonsai Nut to formalize this. From what I can tell he formulated the 6 year JBP one.
