Colorado Blue Spruce Windswept Raft

I kinda like the 'backside' more i think. I'm sure the tree is in good hands. Looking forward for updates.

Nice looking back side of the tree. I like the 1st photo presented for the front best.
It displays itself naturally that way, like it's wedged, or angled towards the viewer
and the jin works better too I think in the 1st photo. Did this one come from Colorado too?
Yep.

True, looking at it as a starting point, the first pic gives way more options.

It’s awesome to see you trying yamadori spruce! I’m always inspired by your use of JBP and JRP, material that is largely unavailable and ungrowable here. I’d love to see how you apply your very refined and meticulous approach to such rugged material. Stuff similar to, though better than, what’s recovering from collection in my own yard.

Did a bit of wiring on the right side:

This is proving to be even more difficult than I had envisioned. Not The wiring, that’s easy. Positioning the branches. All the tips need to be parallel. And out to the right, the base trunk will be in contact with the soil when I put it on a slab. So, it’s kind of hard to envision how I’m going to create some little “trees” over there. And... I need to shop for a slab sometime.

The only hiccup I can think of is, what are your plans for the next branch? The ones after it no worries. 2nd one(that we see)..what will he do?

I dunno. You’ll have to wait a couple days. I’m teaching a class tomorrow.

Consider lifting the extreme ends of each pad up just a tad, basically like what you're taught not to do with JBP. That's how windswept trees often grow.

Oh, I nearly forgot!

A couple months ago, after I had wired the rightmost part, I had a private lesson teaching a guy about wiring, and wiring a large JBP at Plant City. It just so happened to be the same day that Larry Jackel was there teaching a class. I finished up the tree at about the same time as Larry finished his class. Steve and Sandy were going to take Larry out to dinner after closing the shop, and we had an hour or so to kill. So, I brought Larry over to see my garden and koi pond, and we all went out for dinner afterwards.

Anyway, Larry had collected this tree, and said it is in an area infested with elk, and he’s pretty sure it was elk stomped 20 years ago that caused it to be a raft. And, it was in an area that is naturally windy, and training it as a windswept is “natural” h or this tree.

About my collection, he remarked that all my trees seemed “small” to him. The Denver Arboretum where he is curator has big Ponderosas and Colorado Blue Spruces. He was amazed at my Japanese White Pines and how short the needles were.

It was a fun afternoon!

This project might prove to be embarrassing!

It shouldn't be embarrassing, especially if you have roots along the horizontal trunk already. Style it like you would a forest or clump style. I think the far left smaller branch needs to be trainded almost upright like a free standing tree.

That mountain of an olive that you brought to the last nationals was anything but small!!!

I did more wiring. There’s a few twigs here and there that I could put more wire on, but this is it for now:

That front crossing branch is an issue. I can’t decide if I should train it to be high, or low. On the one hand, I’d like to get rid of it entirely, but then the left side of the raft is pointless. Jin it? Maybe.

This is the first true windswept I’ve ever attempted. At least that I remember. I may have tried one 45 years ago!
