Colorado’s Ceramics

I am now fully back into an “obsession phase” with ceramics 😁

I started off with making some smaller rounds to work on the fundamentals.

After a few, I’m getting much better! Decided to work on sizing up to some larger pieces:

Also decided to venture into making ovals on the wheel! This is my very first one. More in the works!

Very nice! Good job! I'd take a big one for collected conifers if you get one.

It might be common potting knowledge, but... How do you make an oval on a wheel??? You make a round pot first then reshape it into an oval?

Also, awesome stuff as usual!

Thank you! Yes I basically made a round “donut” on the wheel (no base). And then once it dried a little bit I trimmed it on the wheel. Then I took it off the wheel and formed it into an oval. It was basically slab building from there, as I attached the donut onto a rolled slab for the base of the pot. Added the feet last and that’s about it!
 
Since the sides of your oval are sloped, did you have any issues with the long sides drooping? Every time I’ve thrown oval walls and put them on a slab, the middle of the long sides end up a lower than the ends

We will see after I fire it 😬

I follow a dude on Instagram who does it this way and it seems to work great for him, though. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Drying the pot slower/longer WITH SUPPORT under the area you are having a problem with and also support with proper material in the kiln might help.

sometimes I will put slip in a mustard bottle and add them that way. or wait till leather hard and just roll up a bunch and score and slip. slip in mustard bottle is easiest to me. but harder to round off when wet so have to dry. mustard bottle like the ones you would see in the diners.

I've never done clay, but my mom used something similar to the items below for shaping fondant for wedding cakes.

I was just asking another potter at my studio this question yesterday. She uses a dowel with a divet carved out of the end applying wet clay.

Great tip, I’m going to try this! Would make it super easy to just add a tiny little dollop of slip :)

Thanks for the ideas! This is pretty much what I’m doing now. I made a little tool out of clay with a divet in the end and I bisque fired the tool. Seems to work pretty well!

I am doing it the same way as you-- just looked around for a rounded object to press my clay into. Then bisque fired it (low cone 08 to be more porous). I roll our a thin coil, and use a razor to cut a tiny disk, slip and score the pot then put the disk on. I wait a few minutes then use the bisque fired mold to press the final shape.

Very cool! I like the one with iron as well! Also the color of your clay!
