Here's where I went with one of the hawthorn. Branching removed and carved to the new trunk line. Only have a movie clip of the the carve, but can take a photo if anyone's that interested.

I marked all of these trees...

Noob question. Have seen that couple of you guys use the term 'marked the tree'.
Does this simply mean that you have marked it so you remember where it is in the woods or it means something else, for instance, chopped the trunk off for collecting in in next year?

I mark trees so i can find them again. Don't make the marker too obvious or some other bonsai nut will collect it first

Most of the time I can just remember it's location but if there are a bunch all growing near each other I just tie a bit of paracord around the base or something subtle.

I mark them with flagging tape. Most of the time I mark the about chest high so it’s easier to see but this is one I field chopped last year.

Big Camellia of some kind. I could have made it shorter, but I wanted to preserve the speckled bark. I'm not necessarily keeping it at this angle, this is just a stable position for recovery purposes.



They always look much smaller in the initial photos!



Had to saw through 5 roots that were about 5-6 inches thick each.

Was going to collect several this weekend but only ended up with this one. Found out too late that media I had left at my folks place had been used up...and didn't want to risk any of the others with the potting soil and x-large grade perlite available. Oh well...will have to try and make it back out there this spring.

This one has good movement, good root spread, decent taper, and a really cool snaking root feature that I am going to try and retain. Chopped about 1-2 inches higher than I think would be necessary for this tree to allow for potential die back.

Next up a couple junipers.

That first tree in the first 2 photos is awesome. That spiraling dead wood trunk is an incredible feature.

Thanks. As of now they've all leafed out, and new growth is extending. Very good sign.

Does my yard count? Forsythia that was growing about 30cm from the main bush. Could make a decent clump some day.

Was on a walk with my Mom and me kids and.....saw this sad fella.

with all the dead, the trunk was very visible .
My mom asked her neighbor friend if she wanted it. I guess she didn’t.


Yikes! The roots definitely reflect the foliage! Or lack there of.
I put it in a pot full of sphagnum moss with a little bark and Napa.

still had a little elastic string from the tag. I suspect this wasn’t planted to long ago.
It was in very poor high clay soil.

can anyone tell me what this is about?

it looks like it spent time in a clamp?
Any thoughts?

We moved about 3 weeks ago and I dug this little sapling out of the old backyard before leaving. Just started budding out. I have it inside because we just had an unseasonal blast of winter come through last night that is supposed to last most of this week.
