Harsh, but I like it. Thanks for the insight. I'll head your advice. So without wire, how do you encourage branches to grow in the direction you want?? I repotted this tree and thus drastically changing the planting angle, those leads were directly in line with the trunk.

To get a branch to grow in the "right" direction comes down to finding a bud back on the branch that "points" in the direction you want, prune back to that bud. Or you see what happens with a blind cut and see where new buds pop. Pruning into mature wood is the only way to get vigorous budding back down the branch.
