CM BONSAI——-My Garden Activities

That is a killer idea lining the pot with the root pouch material Curt! Looking forward to see how it works out.

GLAD I NAMED THIS AN ACTIVITIES THREAD.

Because some of these trees do not stay long.

Here are the new seasons JBP seedling cuttings and The Siberian Elm……

The JBP are consideralbly smaller as I had growhouse heating issues that were not being met.

The Siberian Elm is very nice and I plan to start a bunch of these trunks……recent photo of elm is first one.49B0FBDB-875A-4513-AE98-E0FA46943578.jpeg62738F8F-B49A-445E-806D-4B700DBC7157.jpegD1CAA806-9DB6-4A2C-81F4-B75A0A6C6888.jpeg40DDE8FC-678C-4977-B1CF-5ED2BE0D7AD7.jpeg05877CCB-76A0-4003-B9D8-270EEF76EBE2.jpegB5084565-C2FB-4BA9-8C2C-28D72B80AAB3.jpegEC96B66D-5F0C-4B14-ABA8-9B311D8C4169.jpeg

I now its doing a fine job of rootpruning……I attribute the equally distributed growth effect from the self pruning fabric……a definate win win!!
The tree is only two years from seed…. I did an air-layer when it was 4 mnths

wow, it looks like that stonewool is AMAZING for fast propagation with excellent feeder roots. What sorts of stuff do you use it for? And at what point do you transfer to the root pouch?

Curious to know where you purchase the blocks, as well as whether you found the Rootpouch fabric on it's own or cut your own to line that pot.

SIBERIAN ELM UPDATE—AUTUMN

I have some pics of the tree from late August—early —mid September…..
I am pleased with the trunk base…….so much that I am growing about forty of these in some 2” stonewool blocks over winter..just to create some ground layers such as this ……..these will essentially be straight ground layered trunks…….albeit very much larger ones though.

CAN STUDY THE BRIX CONTENT OF THE LEAVES!!

This tree was cut back about 4-5 times this season and even yet has very high brix( sugar) content……note the extra substance to the leaves.
I read that if brix is over 12% that insects will actually avoid the plant as a food source…….in many cases.

Calcium!!!!
Kelp powder!!!
Chelaters!!!—humic acids/amino acids
Little bit of extra potassium….tiny bit extra

THESE BURNING BUSH AIR-LAYERS ARE NICE…….ALSO THE HAWTHORN FROM BRENT WILL BE INTERESTING LIKE A CLUMP OR RAFT EVENTUALLY.

The first one has an especially swelled trunk on it.
The hawthorn is backbudding……will be cool in a couple years.57AA987B-2307-4AEE-BD93-030E97579D77.jpeg15661C44-8051-4F5B-B75A-CA8F0F4C97AA.jpegF529E3FD-36A0-40B4-9E08-AF38F8FCB025.jpeg

SO ITS AUTUMN AND THE SIBERIAN ELM GETS ITS DETAIL PRUNING….at least for now.

This is coming along…looks nice.I will start it again early indoors during January.

This tree is only two years !
Layered in january 22’
Seedling started SUMMER/EARLY AUGUST 2021 outside!!AEBC1BFF-9EA6-40E0-959F-67A83F4EAA38.jpeg72736323-B283-4735-A862-C4EEF7AF5AB0.jpeg39A19D65-ADFE-4ABD-BA37-D230BA217382.jpeg2FA64A43-78A0-4736-8510-328B52506BF9.jpegFA04C248-3D43-47E8-AEDB-3B29E622C567.jpeg3F3AA24F-3195-4DBB-8862-4718E070EFCD.jpegF6E8C941-87E0-4E31-9547-6EE54FFE088E.jpeg077A9AB3-D448-4AEE-8946-C67C68073021.jpeg3629C514-0FDB-4317-B1C0-9018351031B1.jpeg142EE6B6-C539-4EC2-A345-DF8B363C8D57.jpeg

That is absolutely mental! What did you grow it in between 2022 and now to achieve such nebari and thickness in such a short time? Pond basket? And what is the black fabric between the substrate and the pot now?

Was started early every season in a co2 fertilized growhouse.
The fabric is awesome. It is Thin black fabric from Rootpouch brand rootpots……they make the plant prune itself from entrapment in the fabric.

I start it early in the season indoors after only about 1000 hours of dormancy!!!F1FFF4C6-0237-4A60-B065-61EAF25B4986.jpeg915A903A-0EF6-46AC-AF4A-6B75E95ED3F5.jpegB8802549-67CD-44BF-82AB-7A1121FB516B.jpeg769C8903-7A3A-4C8C-9844-BCC5E3DDFB98.jpeg8A86726D-9FC1-43C6-915E-F488F5ACE147.jpeg1B4EF0B3-778A-4544-B1D1-BFC014EB445E.jpeg4E4FCED0-F1B2-4708-8F6C-0DB7B4DBA2F6.jpeg44885F02-D971-468F-A14C-5037076C0647.jpeg

That's so awesome. I thought roots need contact with air for self pruning. I need to try it myself on some larger pots.

THE SIBERIAN ELM HAS DEFINATELY BEEN GETTING SIBERIAN TREATMENT!!

Many nights around 25 or so degrees F.
Will be good though as I put it in the growhouse early. After two months or even another 5 weeks It should have its 1000 hours dormancy.

This will really have a good fat trunk next season……..not bad for two years!!!

NIGHT TIME PICTURES OF THE SIBERIAN ELM.

After giving it a good flush of the branches and trunk of some hypochlorous acid disenfectant today I decided to take some pictures of it this evening while walking around the yard listening to Christmas music!!

I’m really into these.I need to grow a batch. This is all clip and grow accept at the very beginning .DE002FAA-4B01-4C9D-8F0A-127FE7BB1523.jpeg1B62D9C1-B889-4C7D-9209-CD41D93167D6.jpeg5EE9E5FD-B5E2-4CB1-B8E5-D953B15C7AD3.jpeg64E11078-B2F6-4DEE-9130-C48AD49F19B1.jpeg65CE41C3-4FE4-461A-A52A-C31EA1A585EC.jpegA1923B8B-B790-48A4-87B6-38E37CF171AF.jpeg7F46FF23-A1A6-418F-B236-EC928135B2F3.jpeg

JAPANESE BLACK PINE SEEDLING CUTTINGS.

These have the finest color about them when they get into the sunshine!!

I gave one dose of a higher nitrogen ( ammonia nitrogen) fertilizer also with some vitamin B Magnesium sulphate.

Greened them right up.6686681C-F2AB-40CD-AE30-9ED970639824.jpeg55706133-277C-4E2A-9E35-04BE31CBC4CD.jpeg61A14168-773D-4CF9-930A-1C2421196B42.jpegD077033C-6D1E-4C87-94C5-EEFC319903AC.jpeg6DFABAEC-473A-4B2D-853B-D5F02AA398E2.jpeg76E50391-82E5-4CED-B544-4D30B1568566.jpegDC06E083-5479-4291-8302-5064D9BF06F6.jpeg06FB3CD6-E23D-458B-B7B6-B469279EE362.jpeg1C010B9D-60FB-4E1C-AD57-393AE2C8BB45.jpegDDDE5013-EBB6-4E47-BEA0-E5C4B04F4F10.jpeg78CBA790-103E-47EB-A6AE-2D6678DCD301.jpeg

DIALING IN THE INDOOR GROW TO HOPEFULLY GROW THESE SIBERIAN ELMS TO THEIR FULL GENETIC POTENTIAL!!!!

Slower growth, root starter phase, less intense light, added blue light spectrum( light recipe)
Lower nitrogen, more photosynthesis, more bio-stimulants & calcium………=HIGHER BRIX,THICKER AND STOCKIER PLANTS,MORE VIGOROUS AND ACTIVE ROOTS FOR NUTRIENT ASSIMILATION AND PRODUCTION!!!!!

I obviously get into this………..this approach does not demand extra co2 levels…….co2 fertlization is a quickening of growth for the most part.

I added about 20-30 par of pure blue which creates stockier plants, shorter internodal length and higher photosynthesis …..if you lower the nitrogen levels…..nitrogen assimilation can use 30% of photosynthetic energy reserves…….and can often lead to less durable plant growth and cells.

Can see the 4 blue light I added to an already blue spectrum strong 4000k lampsF5698314-8C49-404A-AFD6-BD0C33DA275A.jpeg616099EC-70E5-4B13-9343-D82EDBA762A6.jpegDD424364-04E4-47D4-BD50-5DFEDD4BA174.jpeg97A2221E-27AD-4D19-BFDC-A3794B29CE9F.jpeg

I am new to the site, and seeing an operation like yours is inspiring to really look at the finer details of how nutrients and grow light can affect the hardiness and usefulness of resulting growth. Amazing work.
