check my baobabs

Speaking without too much experience under my belt, but those don't look like juvenile leaves of a baobab to me. The growing tips also don't look like any of my A. Digitata. Other Baobab species might be different though (although the chance of them being not A. Digitata out side of of Oceania and Africa are quite low.)

What did you do to prep/scarify them? Mine sprouted with an 80% success rate within 3 days of planting with only 3 surviving over a year later (either due to dampening off or me choosing to kill them off. I don't remember exactly).
had them in hot water for a day until they were swollen up, then planted them

Did you happen to break through the seed coating?

In my experience with prepping the seeds, just soaking them isn't enough as the water doesn't penatrate the seed coat. They do swell, but it was only a marginal difference. You will have to wait for natural processes to break them down which could take years.

When the seed itself swells, it cracks open the outer coating quite noticeably. I think my seeds swelled to 2 or 3 times their original size with the outer shell being only slightly swollen.

If you check on my threads, you can see and read about my trial with them initially

@jason biggs are these trees ground/field grown? or do they just stay in massive containers from seed?

stupid question, i know, but i wanna set a realistic growth expectation for my situation

none of my trees have been field grown but most are well over 20 years old... in S.A. they do very well in the plastic containers and can thicken nicely in a few years... wide and shallowish seems to be perfect for strong root growth... cut the top for shaping (no problem) but let the roots grow out until you have achieved a thick trunk.

Thanks, I figure I gotta go from nursery pots to plastic basins
Had a caterpillar eating most of the growth off my seedling, found another tonight trying to have a go at the 2nd flush, hope it does shoot a few leaves before it goes into winter mode

first tree to be brought indoors this autumn...cut all the surface roots off... what do you think about the big ugly bulge at the base??20240416_075457.jpg

When the tree is naked, it does add a strange visual weight towards the bottom. Is it more balanced when the tree is in leaf?

Have you considered attempting elephant scaring in the area?
