check my baobabs

@hemmy this tree is about the size of yours - i planted it out in a big, wide pot and the surface roots you can see are beefing it up nicely...20220423_142306.jpg

this tree already has a heavyweight base but the huge root on the left grew in 1 year...20220423_142558.jpg

Mine is still dormant and probably won’t leaf out for another 2 months. I wish I could get it to push earlier. But it makes for an easy indoor plant in the “winter”, just never water!

@Stella check out this awesome stump and how shallow the root base is... the bottom third of the pot is just stone... this tree had been dry the entire winter and still the roots underneath were very wet - i am going the stone route now so that there isn't any soggy soil trapped under the rootball... how is your tree doing??
i think your winter was a bit cold?20220801_073300.jpg20220730_162606.jpg20220730_162951.jpg

here is the top of the tree - this has been a vigorous grower, as can be seen by the green colour...
I have no doubts that it will grow.20220730_164320.jpg20220801_073725.jpg

The base looks awesome.
Yes, we had the coldest winter in probably 16 years here, with a lot of cold still forecasted.

My tree is still alive 🙈🤣
It didn't do a lot of growing last year. Like literally had about 10 leaves. With the repot I removed about 60% of the tubers and it is still much higher out of the pot than I would like.
Didn't water at all, but it is very very dry, so starting to wonder if I should not water a little...
Kept it indoors for the winter, and will probably only move outside in another month. days are already nice and warm, but nights are still cold
But I'm just going to leave it this year.
Wanted to prune it a bit now, but not sure if that is a good idea.

I've been tremendously unsuccessful with cuttings after trying a bunch of different ways.

Hey Jason,

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that yet another person is growing Baobabs. Mine are only a year old. So I have many years left before I really get my hands dirty.

From my understanding, baobabs grow rapidly in the first few years then slow down. Have you noticed this with any of yours?

Another question I have is if you noticed any leaf reduction due to being constrained in a small pot?

@Stella check how nicely this one has grown... yours has to have boomed with all the heat and now all the rain??
Nice growth you got there.
Got much better growth than previous years. Tremendous trunk thickening this year

I saw a lil stocky one in the garden centre last week, thought it was a ficus at first, since we dont normally see baobabs

i think that is an adenium Bobby... baobabs are never going to make it in the uk. (i don't think?)

still waiting for my seeds to sprout, so far 0/10

black monkeythorns have come up though, 4/5 are growing

Theyre marketing it as an indoor plant, the label said baobab, so no idea really😁

Speaking without too much experience under my belt, but those don't look like juvenile leaves of a baobab to me. The growing tips also don't look like any of my A. Digitata. Other Baobab species might be different though (although the chance of them being not A. Digitata out side of of Oceania and Africa are quite low.)

What did you do to prep/scarify them? Mine sprouted with an 80% success rate within 3 days of planting with only 3 surviving over a year later (either due to dampening off or me choosing to kill them off. I don't remember exactly).
