Hello all..Some of you are familar with this bunjin that I have trained for the last 6 years or so. It has gone through a couple different fronts and other changes. However, all this time, I kept what would be considered a lot of branches for a bunjin. I thought it was a different look, which is what I wanted for this tree. It kind of goes with the somewhat different straight trunk for a bunjin. Anyway, over the last year or so, I have been thinking about cutting the bottom branches off. Here is a virt. The second virt shows the tree with the branches virtually removed.

What do you all think? I am kind of liking it with the branches removed.

I'd leave them. Great tree. Not that you asked but I'd lighten the big jin on the right if it were mine.

Out of the two, I think I prefer the first (current) version. But maybe a better solution lies somewhere between the two images? Not sure...

Hi TheSteve.. Thank you.. Ya, everytime I think I might want to make it more of a traditional bunjin, something just stops me. I have put a lot of time and years of effort into training this tree.

Also, the jin coud probably need do with some reduction.

This tree has always had people on both sides. Some love it as is, others think that it could be more traditional. It is a tough call.

I don't have time to play with sketches right now, but...have you considered sticking with the current structure but shortening the top? And making it flatter up there? Just quickly covering some of that foliage with my finger looks potentially interesting...

Yes, however, the pic is deceiving. The apex was the last thing created on the tree. It is a very young apex. Just set maybe 1 1/2 - 2 years ago. The pic is also from last year so the apex has matured some. When it matures more, I may pull it down and or prune so it's flatter. Also, what is not visible in the pic is there is really no other apex option lower than the current one. If I pulled back the foliage, it would reveal a couple of side branches that could not make a good apex. However, who knows, maybe years down the road, the tree will continue to evolve.

X2.................

Thank you Don.

Interesting, the general opinion so far, has been in agreement with my intitial vision and continuing thoughts over the years for this tree. It has only been over the last year or so, I have been contemplating a change.

p.s. This tree is about 2 feet tall.

Rob

I think you should leave the branches. Without them the tree seems unstable to the right to me.

I kind of agree with coh on this tree Rob, as you said maybe down the road the apex could be a bit flatter. I do not think the reduction of branches are a good idea and you should keep the current image I have seen this in person and I think the foliage suits it quite nicely.

I think its " Bunjirrific" just the way it is ! Its a great looking tree, why change it?

IMO, of course, but to me the tree is much too tall and looks off balance because of it. I would try to shorten the tree considerably.

Late to this party.... But I love the tree with the branches. You loose that indefinable thing that makes it singular when you virt them off.

I like the first image with the branches. The only thing I think might make it more visually appealing to my eye is if the pad on the lowest left branch were just a little smaller in size. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks amkhalid..

Thanks Tom. Yes, you have seen this tree is person so you have a good idea of its proportions. I will most likely be keeping the branches.
