Joe, I have just been using a dremel with various bits, on this one...
Haven't used wood hardner on it, because wood is so hard, and I do want it to rot a bit.
To make my carving look more natural.

I may be telling you something you have already considered but in case you were not aware of it the over all hardness of the wood is no guarantee of how well it will hold up exposed to the weather. My point is that you may at some point in the future consider some sort of preservative to prevent further decomp once the action of nature has given you the effect you desire. I tell you this because I have worked with various varieties of wood all of my life and have seen some really hard wood magically disolve almost over night. I would hate to see your work destroyed by the same that destroys us all,---- time.
What do you use as a preservative? At what point do you apply it? Might sound noobish but input greatly appreciated
MenWax wood hardener is about the only product out there that seems to be OK to use on a living tree.
I've been using Minwax WH but plan on shifting to PC Petrifier. http://www.pcepoxy.com/our-products/wood-repair/pc-petrifier.php
