Hi folks

I have another European Hornbeam project in progress, thought i'd share...

kaizen have a few of these hornbeam stumps and funnily enough this was one of the cheaper ones, i found this piece the most interesting though and it gives some options, along with well developed primarys, i just need to focus on building up the structure further and ramification, a little carving to be done here n there...

i had planned to remove the thick straight section even before having the tree in front of me

i wanted to try something like this

off with the thick trunk,

the tree was literally a dense bush when i got it, this after thinning and branch selection

i toyed with the idea of tilting the tree and having the remaining trunk go up and become dominant, like in the oak image above

not so sure it suits the material, not at this stage anyway,
i think its more suited to a powerful spreading canopy

had to do some further reductions, one or two branches are a bit of an eye sore
20170824_192231 by Bobby Lane, on Flickr

the main branch far right might be reduced to lower shoots later

i think the material is more suited to
Ancient Oaks by Jake S.D., on Flickr

ill be able to get a proper look and do some further styling after leaf drop:)
the back of the tree will be credible as a front, some carving will be done on the scar and it will become a hollow feature..
Nice material!

Before I scrolled down and saw what you did removing the large trunk, I was going to recommend that exact next step.. I see the potential to mirror that first image of a tree in nature you posted..

Thanks Eric, yeh i think from the last angle i posted there is still scope to use that tree image as inspiration, however im not clear on the desired front yet....its growing on me from a few angles this tree. its a welcome dilemma, luckily i wont be choosing a pot for another season:)

Over the summer ive been working on compacting and tightening the image

the hollow was also taken deeper and the stain carved out,

I should name it the jekyll and hyde hornbeam, because it has more than one front...

I like it! I like it very much!
Could we have some dimension of height, trunk width at soil surface please @BobbyLane ?
I wish I knew how to use some photo editor so that I could add a beautiful bonsai pot to this tree!

Hi Nellie, thank you.....
I took some more images in natural light and added a tape measure to give you an idea of dimensions, btw it was taller, but ive recently reduced the highest point(the curvy leader) was cut back to a lower shoot for better taper....so its currently 9in from base, but will get it back to around 11 or 12in....see virt

from under here you can see how the branch taper is beginning to transition quite well, the shoots growing from the first left branch bar were pretty spindly a few months ago

out of interest which angle do you like best?

could possibly go into a pot next season, nothing fancy maybe an unglazed brown pot of some sort, with good depth

there is more trunk and nebari under those thinner surface roots, once it goes in a pot you could see those surface roots removed, the base will look more aged and powerful, atm soil is topped up there

Another season on and a little progress. more branches, better twigging and better transition between branch stumps and branches.....still early days though
it got another wiring/setting of structure. it could probably be simplified, but no rush. i'd like to get it into an oval next season, nothing fancy, a brown unglazed oval will do nicely, less depth than the training pot...
i probably shouldnt have defoliated last season, think i set it back a little, i wont do that again

I'm new to this site and the wee tree site too, but have noticed how your trees stand out on both sites... Very natural and sometimes fairytale... which I can relate to...
Getting great inspiration and ideas from seeing your work on affordable material..
Cheers

Welcome mate! appreciate the kind words, i do love both styles, will be sharing some more over next few weeks, glad you enjoy them.

Me too. Probably sold 15 trees this year & still too crowded when I factor in the dig ups next year.

I’ll have to see what you have for me to buy! ;).

I’ve got lots of space but looking to buy my own house so I’m worried that space will be limited or gone.. quite a big (in addition to the large deal of buying a house...)

Certainly, defoliation set it back because you are developing branches. But it's heading the correct path :)
Do you have something in mind for those 2 or 3 smaller roots on the left side?

Hi Nellie, thank you:)

im going to put this tree in a bonsai pot next season, the plan will be to clip a few of those spindly roots and reveal more of the base underneath.
the defoliation was really prompted from removing very large leaves to let light in, then getting carried away n removing the rest.

this one was re potted and i removed a dead root, there is now a small uro in its place, the branches were also taken in a bit so all this tighter growth is the interior buds from last season that got a bit shaded
