Bonsai Classifieds Trees and Pots for Sale

I haven't bought anything on there yet, but the prices are really good. The trees are hands down better than those on ebay. I think the difference is you have people that actually do bonsai vs those that are looking to make a quick buck with a stick in a pot.

Ben thats a nice tree. I think Danw also has a few trees on there too.

every forum provides opportunity, and has pros and cons. This facebook thing looks promising. I don't use facebook but I'm considering starting because there is an untapped (by me) resource in place and, quite frankly, I think ebay takes too big a cut. I sell a lot of trees from my website and direct contacts. I used to sell a lot on ebay but got discouraged by excessive fees and a downward spiraling marketplace. I've been listing more there lately solely because of the exposure (which is good and bad). People have been encouraging me for years to join facebook because of the bonsai community, and I've been avoiding it because I don't have the time or the desire to learn. Well, maybe its time.....

Actually if a groups setting is public then there's no way to limit viewing of posts you make in it. I msgd the owner of the group he's thinking of making some revisions to the group maybe implementing privacy. Here's a Kishu I'm current selling on there, Bob has some nice olives, and there's some great little crape myrtles and a trident on there as well. While it may not be the perfect sales place yet the fact that the whole world doesn't know about it is a good thing!

Ben

Sweet now I put two and two together. You were at bonsaiathon right? Super tall?

Be sure and add me if you do! I think it is a good way for you to interact personally with customers in a very timely way, which makes you feel more approachable. There's a fine line between appearing professional and becoming a 'friend figure' that people want discounts from on a "we're friends" basis, however.

I can understand not wanting strangers to know where your bonsai are- just keep your whereabouts vague. List CA instead of Los Angeles or something. One of the cool things about some of the bonsai groups on facebook is that there aren't the personality clashes you find on a lot of forums. It is definitely a personal choice- one I fought for years but now I'm glad I'm part of it.
Like anything else one has to weigh the pros and cons and make there on decision.
There are some good things available though. Here are a couple of cool little twisted pomegranates I have listed with an opening bid of $35.00

I'm a facebook user, but there are definitely things I don't like about the site. In the past, they have made site "upgrades" that have resulted in changes to privacy settings...so you might think only "friends" are seeing what you post, but maybe not. Perhaps they aren't doing that anymore. They also control who sees what you post - you might think all your contacts (friends) see everything but that isn't true, it depends on how much people interact with you (whether they "like" or comment on your posts). I suppose it's a natural type of progression but in many ways I preferred the "original" facebook.

I will say that I am a member of one bonsai group on facebook, and it is the nicest "forum" environment I've been a part of. No bickering, no BS, just people posting about bonsai.

As for the bonsai classified group...I'd rather not be posting my bids for all to see. I'd prefer if it were like ebay where your true identity is hidden.

Why are you guys so weird about people knowing you do bonsai?

I don't want to turn this into an anti-Facebook rant, but I object to ANY company knowing all my intimate and personal details - for all time - and selling them to the highest bidder. If you don't want your wife/mom/kids/boss/neighbor/politicians/police/NSA knowing about it, you shouldn't put it online - ever. :) It is a personal Libertarian thing with me because the government WON'T try to protect online privacy, and in my personal opinion - couldn't even if they wanted to.

People are concerned about privacy and identity theft, when the reality is that THEY are the ones creating the content that is stolen or misused. No content - fewer worries.

I'm about 6 foot not too tall, have a ponytail. I was at bonsaiathon briefly on Sunday. We're you the one with the nice group of trees you were chopping way back? Crape myrtles I think.

Just create an abnormality in your account to protect yourself. My last names spelled a few letters off on Facebook for that very reason.

gotcha I remember exactly who now. Yes that would be me pruning crapes. Its funny all this time I figured you to be of Asian decent with the username Beng :)

I joined for a look see. But, see faults in it. Personally I down play what I pay for my trees I do own. Just no one needs to really know what I pay for things. This makes that unable to be done. PM bids? Not sure that is permitted or not. I have ones who really try to find every cent I pay for things...always asking "What did that set you back?" Rude when it's just to talk behind your back or be nosy, not really any interest in what the item is.

I understand that but I've asked about price before...just because I am interested and want to know if I can afford it, not to be nosy.

No offense intended by this, but you are surrounded by the wrong "ones" if that is the case. Life is too short and you don't have to deal with that.

A sweet little hut stone I picked up at the last auction for what I consider an extremely fine price. The picture doesn't even start to do it justice.

Why are you guys so weird about people knowing you do bonsai?

Because it's a weird hobby to most people......... Mr miyogi stuff......

Want it to be private so my wife and every other person I know does not really know how much I pay for nice trees .

The more that I skim over things...the more uncomfortable I am...I don't know these people from Adam...Ebay,you can see there history...or even here you get to "know" members. So much gray area...

just about all of us on there know each other one way or the other. If I dont know someone specifically, someone else on there typically does. Way better than a virtually anonymous seller. Thats actually some of the upside of the classifieds group, not to mention sellers like: Don Blackmond, Owen Reich, Dale Cochoy, Michael Ryan Bell, etc. If all of those names are not familiar then keep reading and get to know them as they are all great assets to American Bonsai

EDIT- just realized Don B has yet to sell on bonsai classifieds

I have found a potter there I really like. I keep getting priced out of their auction offerings pretty quickly. I am quite pleased that more of you indicating that you are staying away than are indicating that you are joining the group......

Might change my tune if I decide to try to sell something though.....

I have enjoyed the site and continue to try to win auctions on things that interest me. Personally, I do not understand why folks wouldn't try it out and see what happens, especially folks who do not have access to a local bonsai supplier.

Regards,
Martin
