Hey guys,

Was able to pick up this big fagus sylvatica purpii reversi in early spring this year. It is in a 32.5 gallon pot and has about a 4" base. It only cost me $20 and a broken back as well. I let it be this growing season just to gain strength and vigor and the tree did very well. I am looking to further reduce the height of the tree to correct some inverse taper but wanted to know if beeches are good candidates for air - layering. Has anyone had good luck with it at all?

Not bad- got any full on shots? Another thing you can do with that bad inverse taper is carve a hollow out and allow a lower branch to grow one leader and keep closer 2nd'ry branch in check and ramified to thinken the base. I see a fair about of old beech with some sort of hollow that has rolled over it to crate some amazing knarlyness and age. Yes beech can be air layered
