Big Honkin’ Azalea

Been thinking about this design. Here are my thoughts.

The larger trunk appears to be a great stand alone tree. There is also some good to great promise in each of the secondary trunks….. as separate designs. As a result, believe the best path is to air layer off the other trunks next spring at appropriate areas.

Just. my thoughts

@Deep Sea Diver when do you start your air layers and about how long til you see enough roots to remove the layer from the parent plant?

The growth at the base of the right hand trunk has really taken off now. (Pics to follow.) I think I’m going to layer that branch after the new growth and use that as my primary branch. The layer will have plenty of movement so that could be promising. There is another branch also on the right immediately behind the previously mentioned branch and with a properly planned air lay on that one I could have the beginning of a very neat cascade. The branch/trunk jutting off to the left doesn’t feel like it contributes to the main trunk at all so that will be removed/layered as well. So far so good… some decent late summer early fall growth.

Well done!

Azaleas can air layer pretty fast, about 6-8 weeks in the spring.

Also we ground layer branches in the early fall and cut these off in the early to mid spring. So one can also do the same thing for air layers.

Might want to think about layering off the tops of these branches first and then go for the bottom.

Remember taper is important with azaleas too.
