I transplanted one of my BC's into the ground today now that I got the area ready for planting. I cut off about an inch or so of the tap root. It had a bit of fine roots but hopefully I left enough on for growth. Do you think I trimmed off too much?
My plan now is to let it grow out a few seasons or more if needed to thicken up.

BC are often collected with little to no feeder roots, like big stump cuttings. They root pretty easy. I think if it's watered well it should be happy.

I think you have plenty enough roots. I'm curious as to how big you want the "finished" trunk to be. 1" or 2" in diameter would entail an entirely different procedure than 4" or5". I would imagine the 1"-2" trunk could be had in a couple of years in your climate. The larger would take 4-5 years. The 4-5 year plan would still probably have you cutting a large tap root and starting from the point of an original collection from the wild. No problem for a bald cypress, though. Feed the heck out of it and keep the ground WET. Wet - as in muddy 24/7/365.

This one I was thinking more around the larger 3"- 4" diameter (possibly up to 5") since I currently have 4 others that I'll be keeping in the 1" to 2" diameter. Keeping it WET will not be an issue around here but will water regularly in the summer months.
Thanks for your input!

I'm also wondering if I should chop one side now to get taper. My thoughts were that they grow so fast that the other side would fill in with enough branches to feed the trunk. I am still not sure if I want to keep the sling shot "V".

I would chop one side. It should have no problem.
