That is a good link!I'd so get a 'Kogetsu' and a 'Komei'. Then, if you care for large flowers and you want the very best large flower cultivar, I'd get 'Juko' and 'Haru no Sono'. If you want something small and plain that is hardier and for bonsai/foliage specifically, I'd get two of these: 'Kozan/Kinsai/Chizen/Kazan/Korin'. Those are the big name cultivar that are extremely popular. Some of those others, I don't recognize by name. And if you are in zone 5 and buying this for a 5 year bonsai challenge I wouldn't get the large bloom pre-bonsai era maruba-type cultivar like Aikoku/Eikan/Shinnyo-no-Tsuki/Gyoten/Kagetsu, unless you feel like collecting and you got several. (Granted, Juko and Haru no Sono fit that description too, but they are just too lovely to not buy. Those that I just mentioned are kind of obselete/old fashioned a little bit).
But above those, I'd get an 'Aozora' instead from White's Nursery:
Just because I love 'Aozora'/'Hekisui'. And they are in Maryland, so that should be easier for you east coast people. Don't know if their service is any good, obviously.
(And I learned that nurseries are 'Essential businesses' during covid19.)
Hini Crimson and Mother’s Day? Sounds like a Dutch nursery: Moederkesdag. I can't believe that stuff still sells here.
I finally found something at Whites that I wanted to work with, but sadly when I started to look about how to purchase, I found out they don't ship!!!Good find on that nursery. They are about 1.5hrs away from me. I may take a trip there to see what they have on site verse ordering from Nuccios and having to pay that shipping.
Yep, I just called and found out the same thing.... calling Nuccio’sI finally found something at Whites that I wanted to work with, but sadly when I started to look about how to purchase, I found out they don't ship!!!
It's a lot of trouble to ship plants, I found something at Nuccios if they have it... Too bad you have to call them, I'd rather just order online. Also Whites has larger plants available.@JudyB maybe someone close would help you out with picking it up and shipping it since White's doesn't.
Does Nuccios have any larger sizes of the plants, or are they all small cans?Yep, I just called and found out the same thing.... calling Nuccio’s
Hmm. I guess I have to not agree. Calling Nuccios is not really an issue and quick on shipping, they do it all the time at a reasonable price. That’s how a family owned business stays in business. I actually was working with them right now and picked out 3 very late Satsuki bloomers with them. Their plants quality is really good, 1 gallon size, but their Satsuki are in such high demand that they don’t often have time to get big. But ask, you might get lucky!@JudyB you are definitely right about the shipping trouble but one plant would be too bad. I most of the japanese maples I have online.
I think @EricMack and I just broke their website now I don’t even have their number to call... says their bandwidth limit has been exceeded... can you give me the phone number please?Hmm. (Disclosure - I do not work for them or have any interest in their firm! Just like their plants)
They are about 1.5hrs from me. I am planning to make a trip there, but that won't be until August for my birthday. I've bought quite a bit of plants this spring.....I need to take it easy before getting more plants.I finally found something at Whites that I wanted to work with, but sadly when I started to look about how to purchase, I found out they don't ship!!!
Saw this youtube vidoe tour of Nuccio's and seemed most suitable to post this here:
Yeah I had a long conversation with Tom last week when ordering and then the following day as well. I sent him a pic of my Kurume as he was interested in the history of that tree. He is a great guy, and the plants I got from them are good quality and size for the pricing. I told him about satsukimania, I was surprised that he didn't know of it.Nice video! It's always great to be able to put a face on a person I've spoken to! 85 years in the family business - that's just awesome.
thanks
