Another Metal Halide Thread...

Say hello to leaf burn and high power bills!

Nope! Not with the 250W at least. This light won't run up a high power bill at all, and the leaf burn wouldn't be as bad as it would with a higher wattage light. Plus, if I'm smart, the light won't be close enough to cause leaf burn.

Lets say (hypothetically) I'm unable to find studs in the ceiling to hang this light, or they're in a place where they're of no use, anyone have any tips on how I could have this light above my tree?

Studs are in walls...

Joists are in ceilings......

Cut a piece of plywood 3 inches longer than the centers between your joist. Either two feet on center or 16 inches on center. Screw the plywood to the joists and then you have a plywood platform that will allow hanging of the light.

There are stands to hang your light from that you can buy. Or you can put a couple of big eye bolts into the studs and thread a steel rod in between. Hang your light from the rod and you can move it around too !

See now that's what I thought. I just remember reading online on a few forums where people claimed studs were in ceilings. I like your plywood idea, thanks!

Thanks! I like this idea too. My carpentry skills are just about zero, so hanging a light from the ceiling will be a whole new challenge for me

Thats a great idea too!

How many big eye bolts would you say it would take to hold up a 25 pound light? Just two big ones? Thinking about what my options are.....

Two big ones and a steel rod in between will hold 25 lbs. easily. Make sure you screw them into the wood.

Thanks Dave. I'll head up to Lowes and see what they recommend. Now I've just gotta find where the wood beams are...

Mind my asking how loud that light is?
I was recently give a 250w halide set up but it has a remote ballast and it is loud!

It's got an internal ballast, so it's really quiet.

Aren't ceiling joists 16 inches apart? So if I measure from the wall 16 inches out, shouldn't there be a beam there?

Well, if you'd like to test it out, use it to find what you think is a joist. Drill up in to the ceiling and if you get nothing but drywall then you know you've done something wrong. Worst case senerio, you have a bunch of small holes to patch :D

No you can not find a joist this way. For one you don't know which way they run. If you're lucky you might see a nail pop or a tape seam. These fall on joists or wall studs.

Using a stud finder is your best bet. Practice using it somewhere you know where studs are on a wall. They can be deceiving only if they pick up electrical wires and some stud finders will tell you if what your picking up is a wire.

Well I did go and get a stud finder. It's one that tells me where there are wires as well, and apparently there are wires all up in and around my ceiling. Maybe hanging this light from the ceiling isn't the best option :D

Older units were much louder than the newer ones. I put my remote ballast downstairs, and drilled a cable hole, so I didn't have to listen to it when I had my old one.

Well, I've just been informed that hanging the light from the ceiling will not be an option. People with more power than what I have have told me this, so nothing I can do about it . Now I need a DIY light stand to support the light....help
