Another Itoigawa

Brian. how is Bjorn as an instructor? He seems like an approachable guy from what I can tell, but I've certainly never met him in person, let alone had any one on ones with him. I'm interested in picking up some nice stock in the next several years. Being located in GA now, his nursery isn't all that far of a drive for me. I'd love to have some sessions with him once I have material worthy of his time (and the money I'd be spending). When you say he has material at all price ranges, I'm assuming the low end is still relatively expensive. Thanks for sharing.
... and when did you move to Roswell?? We're basically neighbors now.

I made the move about a month ago. I’m being reborn into bonsai of sorts because I finally have a yard! No more ficus under T-5s for me. And I plan to really dive into the hobby headfirst. I also plan to do some collecting around my in-laws place up in Blueridge (which I think is up in your neck of the woods).

I live in East Cobb just south of Rt 92... we literally are in neighboring towns.

Thanks @Brian Van Fleet just curious about whatever way I could give him some support thru merchandise purchase, that sort of thing.

Shed a few pounds? Sit-ups based on Tagovailoa's combined yardage every week? You'll be shredded by January 4th!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Wonder if he would ever try to be a licensed quarantine facility for importation...…..;)o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O:D:D:D:D:D:D

Juniper looks great!:)

He is selling merch at his site:

I bought a long-sleeve hoodie tee, and my 17-year old daughter straight started laughing at me when I wore it. Apparently, I’m too old to wear those now. I won’t lie, I was a little hurt.?
Doubt he‘d do a quarentine site, it’s likely easier to rent space at someone else’s. Brussels is only 3.5 hours away.

Nothing like kids to make you feel old....

Had to put all the hockey and football jerseys away.....they seem to elicit the same response.:(

Even the white #12 'Bama jersey honoring Broadway Joe!!! Damn shame, thought I looked pretty good in it!;):(:(:(

but I guess it does look odd to a youth, kinda like this....

Front of the thread, your kid's are helping with bonsai. These short, few years later, ya' get their derision!! I've got a lot to look forwards to!:D:D:D:D

Really has matured quite a bit from your initial efforts to today. A pretty modest time frame, too. In "bonsai" parlance. But the years keep on ticking by, that's for sure.:(:D:D:D

You’d expect no less from Broadway Joe. Compared to that fur, you’d think a jersey or hoodie would be easy to pull off for life, guess not!

My daughter used to work on trees with me every Saturday until around the time of that photo of her helping with the repot. After that spring, she started to realize Bonsai is about as cool to a teenage girl as a dad is in a hoodie. She has an Azalea 3-tree group that she forgets for 11 out of 12 months a year. The trunks are getting about 2” on 18” tall trees. They’re getting pretty gnarly and beefy. I need to take a current photo and find one when we planted it back in about 2009.

My buddy put these 3 shots together for a time-lapse, this is pretty cool.

Really maturing into the design and showing some great character.
Excellence in the technique and applied thoughtfully thru-ought the progression has started to produce a grand image. Very well done!

…..and of course, great horts in shorts!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D

Classy and no clutter. Live edge on table top? Accent somehow feels a little bit under-sized, but the relatively muted color of the foliage works well. I've always felt that some accents have a little too much color. So they draw maybe too much attention away from the tree displayed.

Great tree, shoo-in for "People's Choice"!;):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes, live edge. I had it made for my JBP/antique Chinese pot combo for Nationals last year. I withdrew it due to health, and hope to show it in better condition next year, so I haven’t showed much of it yet...

Accents are a stumbling block for me. I am really not good at them, so a couple years ago I decided to just start potting stuff, weeds, small flowers, dwarf hostas, and mossing them up, hoping that over time and with my neglect, something interesting will emerge. This is a new assembly, and I’m not quite sold on it. I still have a few days and other choices...

...But ANYTHING but People’s Choice, please. My Kinsai won it last year I think, because it was by the front door, in bloom and unusual. Most people won’t know a Shimpaku from a shitzu.

Tree is looking terrific. Try the accent on the right instead and see what you think?

Brian, I love your tree. I saw it at the Nationals a couple years ago. So, I’m familiar with the styling, and spoke with Bjorn about it.

But, today’s image, while much softer than when it had been recently styled, seems a bit unbalanced. Maybe it’s the “camera effect” and it doesn’t do this in person, but it seems to me to be “off balance”.

At the Nationals, you and Bjorn had worked on getting the pads horizontal. Today, they’ve relaxed. I like the softness. But, for some reason, it appears to be falling to the left. I drew a line under the lower pads (with my finger on my iPhone, so it’s crude) but that diagonal, with the bottom of the left lower pads dropping left, and the bottom of the right lower pads rising, well, it just seems like the tree is in the process of falling to the left! Especially since the visual weight of the foliage is on the left.

I think if you were to make minor adjustments to both those pads to bring them both more horizontal, balance would be restored.

I would love to come see the show, but Young Chou will be at Atlanta Bonsai Society, and I need help with accent plants, too!

Good luck at the show!
