Indeed. They came out of a movie theater that another buddy was renovating. He picked em up hoping to play an outdoor show, back when we had a bass player. Now they reside in his father's garage. I didn't mind storing them here, but my wife got sick of looking at them. Sooo.... They had to go.

Today I did some hard pruning (at a slightly risky time of year) to provide sunlight and hormonal signals to the backbuds that are ready to go. It appears I still need to work on some whorls and bar branches, but that will come in time. Since these are dwarf specimens from Iseli I might end up doing more clip-n-grow work than aggressive wiring and bending.

Unfortunately, after I made this final cut, the tree started declining markedly. It is now badly yellowed, and I am trying to save it from not dying completely. If it makes it through this winter, I will leave it alone for at least a full year.

Damn that is nice, I love the old bark. When you repot I assume you will try to get it closer to the center of the pot.
You just don't see old bark on a tree that small often. You are right to be concerned about wiring it.

It is interesting that a few post have differing pruning techniques with differing budding responses and no one stops to think about it. Or, at least comment.

How about elaborating on that comment? It could be a path for continuing discussion, or clearing up something of confusion. When it comes to Mugo Pines few things get past me without comment unless I missed something.
