All aboard the Mugo train!

Are you allowing the wire to bite in on purpose to create some swelling?

Yes, that was my initial plan anyway but now seeing it play out I’m having second thoughts. I may remove it soon.
It could make an interesting effect. Was the plan to leave the wire permanently and let the trunk grow around it?

No, I was going to let it really cut in and then remove and use the indentation as a shari with the live vein spiraling around it. Trying to imitate the spiraling yamadori look.

Ah gotcha. That might look pretty cool.

Got a Mugo for Father’s Day. Got some sweet movement and a nice trunk. Did a first prune today. Trying to follow the Vance protocol. Would you say I kept it to 1/3? I have a before and after from the top view.

Agreed. That is how the first one ate it. I have taken off 2 to 3 minor branches each year but that is all. No decandle or bud selection. It gets fed and burped, just need to buy a bib and pacifier for this big baby. Hopefully it doesn't get upset after I carve that knuckle out in July.
Do I need to apply any putty or lime sulfur to the area I remove from the knuckle? I was thinking about doing it today.

I would apply a wound sealant.
Lime sulfur isnt really a sealant, we use it on areas we jin or shari after it dries to keep it whiite and preserve it.

That's a great progression! What time of year did you repot in 2020, spring? Then when did you style it in 2021, late summer?
Thanks!
repot into pond basket was June 15 2020
Styled July 25 2021
Repotted this year spring into bonsai pot
Thinned growth 2 or so weeks ago

Here's how I spent Canada Day. Pretty happy how it's shaping out but it's got a long way to go still. There's a whole whorl of 6 branches on the lower level that will need to be addressed with time. But I'm going to leave it for now so that I don't stress the tree anymore then I already have.

First pot of my mugo from it's nursery pot, built a planter from a pallet, now fingers crossed it likes it and thickens over the next few years
