All aboard the Mugo train!

As we talk about collecting mugos.
For some time now i am planing to go to mountains and collect one. Not so big as Vianna1202 did. Maybe with an inch thick trunk.
I am searching for information but i found that many people change soil to bonsai soil imediately when collect some say leave it till tree fully recover. So how is with that?
And in mountains i saw last year many mugos grow between rock or where is a bit more flat in a grawel so it can be easily bate rooted.
About right time to collect should be early summer? As it is for repotting.

Vienna1201 how is with that in Austria.
In Slovenia is more or less protected area where you can find good mugos. On higher elevations. Like Triglav national park, and Karavanken,...

Dear Jure, imo with conifers you should keep as much soil with the roots as possible (because of the fungus, i found this website very helping: http://www.yamadori-bonsai.info/Putz_roh_Engl.html). Best time is either October / early November or March (that's my experience with pinus sylvestris at least).
You should probably not dig something up in protected areas. I asked the administrator of the land, they usually do not care (as mugos are seen as a foe in keeping the pastures tree-free).
We should go together for a yamadori hunt :)

That wont be too bad as it would be first time for me. We can contact by email or something. But i dont know how to send private message.

And surely if i go i will not go in protected area. But will be close haha.
Thanks for info

Grabbed one today lets see how it does :D

Literally growing out of the 1 gal nursery pot the nebari is 2 1/2" across that I can see atm. Not bad for $15 bucks lol

Well 90 pages, a few loads of laundry and a few tecates in :p

Lots of information to absorb but it should be a fun ride.

Browsing tonight and saw this.
Also I just ordered a mugo teeny. Will share pics when it arrives.

I was at a nursery looking for some other stuff, but noticed they had gotten more mugos. I had a look through them, and found this guy. Initially I walked away, knowing I already have more than a few of them. But I ended up going back and grabbing it. Couldn’t bear the thought of someone else grabbing him. Definitely the most mature mugo I’ve found.

Pretty much what I did when I got mine went to get something else and came home with it as well lol. Plus I had to get it when I saw the single trunk. :D

Here's how you get started. If you don't know it you will soon find out that the most important part of a bonsai is the trunk and the base of the tree. Having said that if you are asking for advise don't yu think that a clear photo of the base and the trunk would be far more iimportant than the salad bar above it? When you take pictures you have to illujminate that portion of the tree. Most of the time that is easier to do if you pull the tree from the pot and pull the debris from the base of the tree and take a picture of the base, trunk and salad all in one.

That picture wasn’t intended for a request for advice. Just documenting it’s appearance when I brought it home. I will be taking the kind of pictures you’re suggesting in early summer when it’s time to get it into a colander/pond basket. Once I’ve got it repotted I will definitely be looking for some input on reducing branches. I am hoping to get your take on a few of the mugos I’ve picked up over the last couple of months. I’ll be posting pics in the summer repotting season, and I’m even going to wait for responses before doing any cutting. 😉

Whether that's what you intended or not some day you are going to have to address that issue.

Did you get your mugo you ordered? Let's see a picture. :)

Since I don't see anyone else doing it, I'll post an update on my mugos I'm growing from seed.

Seedlings are about a year old. The five individual seedlings in the black pots have all been cut as seedlings and are developing really nice radial roots. All others have not been cut. Also a few future neagari projects in there as well.

One thing to note about the seedling cuttings, is that they have all developed multiple (2 or 3) low buds close to the surface of the soil where the other seedlings have focused on going straight up.

I'll update with some pictures this summer once they've put some real growth on.

I added two more recently. The first one is a Carsten’s Gold, and the second is a Big Tuna. According to the signage it was field grown, and certainly is a good size. It had some burlap wrapped around the trunk which I peeled back to get a better look at the trunk, but I’ll have to wait for the repot to get any idea about the nebari.

It's nice to see Mugos becoming available from the nursery trade again. Over the last few years they have been as scarce as hen's teeth.

Interesting to see! I sowed some as well, they sprouted, but nothing else.. either they're growing impeccable slow or they're deas. Summer will show.

I had the same experience.
Root growth is great, but not much up top.

Hopefully they put on some real growth this year.
