In a nature area where I go for a walk there is this mature Scots pine with a beautiful branch. It’s kind of hard to see in the picture but it loops around and a dead branch curves though the loop. Right after all the curving are a lot of fine branches that are not leggy at all. I am always wondering if it would be possible to air layer this branch? I have no experience with air layer, does it stand any chance and if so how to approach it? The branch is about an arm thick.

Air layers tend to form roots on the gravitational bottom. So if you cut a ring in this branch, the main tree will probably produce roots there, instead of the branch.
Older pines generally don't air layer well.

So these two factors combined give you a small chance of success. But if you can lift the branch and pull it upright, your chances can improve albeit with just a small percentage.

I’ve tried to air layer a Scots pine multiple times before with zero successes and I was doing it on a smaller, younger branch than that. I would not expect this to be successful.
