Where to air layer this Shindeshojo?

Will be trying to layer my shin deshojo again this year. Mine failed last year because of poor aftercare. Seems it could have used more babying in the shade after removal.

Do you think they were underwatered? Just taking notes to try to avoid the same mistakes

I think I had them in too much sun when first removed. Should have left it in the shade for longer.
