Hi everyone,

Does anyone know a place in USA or Canada where I could find the ''beni chidori'' japanese maple cultivar? It's a wonderful variety that puts up pink leaves in spring... Bjorn Bjorholm shared a nice picture of it here:

I have found a supplier in France, but the customs won't let any maple thicker than half an inch enter from Europe because they fear a particular kind of caterpillar or sucker insect. So I was wondering if someone had this cultivar in USA, which would be much easier for me to deal with the customs. Here is the link from France:

You might try these guys... I don't see it listed on their site, but they might know where to get them. Sometimes these places are working on other trees behind the sceens that aren't available to the public yet. - They have been great to work with so far as well. :)

Thanks!

i didn't know them before. I wrote to them to see if they can do something. I hope so! I'll give you some news.

mountainmaples.com seems to be more like a search engine... unfortunately I wasn't able to find it there.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Unfortunately, Mountain Maples bit the dust several years ago. The Laytonville, Calif. outfit had an extensive variety of specialist Japanese maples. I got an arakawa from them that was expertly grafted. Wish they were still around...

Ok... I guess it explains why the site isn't too much what you'd expect from a tree seller. I haven't got any response from maple stone ornementals yet.

I tried iselinursery.com, and they have plenty of species but they couldn't help me in getting that particular cultivar. I wonder how the cultivars have here in north america get here in the first place...

That's too bad, they were super nice people to deal with. :(

THey are clones (cuttings) taken from parent trees, probably imported long ago. Cuttings can be made from older cuttings that have grown into trees, and so on, and so on.

Thank you! I've sent them a message. If I can find someone who can import it from Japan or France I'd be very happy!

Is there any updates on where one can find this cultivar? I would love to purchase a rooted cutting.

did you ever succeed in finding a beni chidori? I'm in montreal.

I ran into a guy from The Toronto Society who Imported a super refined one but who knows if he would ever try to propagate it, If he did some cuttings he would make a killing of them.

The previous owner goes by the name Iv An on facebook. He sold the tree, and the current owner has no interest in propagating it. The toronto bonsai society is not aware of anybody else who has beni chidori
