Prescription medication must be fun. This guy is a freakin wack job.

Actually I am being generous in my Original Post using 100 years as a Base Line ...it should really be 500 years old....

Note* When Qualifying a True Bonsai tree one has to think in a Historical sense or Context....

Bolero - chuckle - cativo

Akadama was used by those around Tokyo - the others used
river gravel, successfully.

Bonsai is supposed to have existed since the Hanging Gardens
of Babylon.
And functionally in India for ayurvedic use.

Hmmmm, all of my “bonsai” seems more influenced by Budweiser and Miller Lite. Never heard of Olmec, I’ll have to try some. Bet they make a good IPA. 😜

Come on Bolero not only is that a racist and antagonistic thing to say it is blatently untrue. We are left with the really true answer which is the request: Prove it.

So, one argumentative control freak seeks to red-define "tree in a dish". Troll elsewhere.

Vance...Bonsai is derivative of a Cultural practice of Japan growing dwarfed trees for show and collection and is a carry over from the Chinese Cultural practice of Penjing....these two Cultural events are thousands of years old.
Modern day American Bonsai, post WWll, is simply duplicating or making look a like trees of Asian Culture....
Although many modern day Bonsai Gardeners (like you & many others on BonsaiNut) excel in creating look a like Bonsai, not true Bonsai...
Major modern day American, Asian & European Bonsai growers are producing for the huge World Wide consumer market...
True Bonsai growers go back to the early non commercial collecting and show days of pre WWll and much earlier....
Although I respect and admire your work and others work it is simply not old enough to be other than a look a like Bonsai...
That's my interpretation of modern day Bonsai and I'm sticking to it.....
Chuck
PS... the proof is the Historical context of Penjing Bonsai....

This may actually be the SINGLE DUMBEST FUCKING thing ever said about bonsai in all of the history of bonsai. None of it is even CLOSE to accurate or real. Its not even an 'alternate' view. This is akin to 'THE MOON IS MADE OF CHEESE'. Dude just stop please. Lmfao.

Bolero I guess I kind of know what direction you are going at, today's artists and skilled bonsai caretakers can turn a pre bonsai into a bonsai in a couple years after that the structure is been set and it will get refined and eventually be show ready from that point it will look like a bonsai but the plant does not have the age what you call true bonsai even if it's a hobby copied from the Japanese culture still it is bonsai and if it gets propper care it will keep on getting older but never japanese or Chinese but an American or in my case Dutch bonsai compare this with fishing, fishing to catch a shark or tuna is called fishing but throwing your rod out for fun to catch a little 10 cm fish in the pond is also called fishing a fish in the Netherlands us just as fish as an American fish.

No, ya don't. That's western romanticized bullshit.

Bonsai in Japan as you probably know it is LESS THAN 100 years old for crying out loud.

What a load of infantile, simplistic manure. According to your naïve logic, there are no TRUE penjing. The vast majority of China's penjing were destroyed in the Cultural Revolution in the 60's and 70's.

As for 500 year old bonsai, HAVE YOU ACTUALLY SEEN ONE. I mean except in pictures on the Internet.

The white pine pictured below was begun in 1626--it's only 400 or thereabouts. It's in the National Arboretum. There are several trees there over 300. For the most part, these ancient trees bear no resemblance to what you perceive as bonsai. By modern standards they don't "say bonsai".
