I had to go out of town last week on business and drove past a Mom & Pop that I figured I would stop and check it out on the way back. It was about 1:00 by the time I finally made it there and the temp was 92° so I didn’t want to stop for long as I was in my dress shirt and pants. I started looking around at the junipers and all they had were examples like they sell at the box stores. So, I moved on to the shade cloth area and noticed a few JMs hidden among some yard trees. There were about ten red and green maples and then there it was; an awesome ungrafted Seiryu Laceleaf (the only one). It stands about 6 feet and trunk is close to 2 inches with small 1 inch leaves and after I remove a few branches has some decent movement.

It’s not over yet. On the way out I asked the owner if he had any other junipers and tells me there’s more out back. Out back? In a flash I’m amongst a sea of potted plants and trees. I headed for the junipers and was not disappointed. Picked up five Pasoni in 3 gallon pots with trunks ranging from 2 ½ - 3 inches above the soil line. They need repotted badly but I’ll be patient and wait until they are dormant. He also said I could have as many Grey Owls as I wanted for $5 each. I know they don’t make good bonsai but what the heck I bought three to play around with. Nice day at the office… Can't wait to go back:D

I love that Laceleaf. Where do you plan to chop it at?

Looks like you also found some nice trunks on those junipers. I have never worked with that variety but I am sure you will have fun taming those beasts.

Wow, what a haul!

Time to learn (if you do not know yet) how to graft. Some of those Juni would be a fast** project and much improved if you do. ;)

** - Fast relative to other training alternatives.

I'm going to air layer the big one on the lower left (it's just way to straight) and the big one to the right of the bend. My son wants one and I wouldn't mind having another myself. After those are gone I'm going to regroup and see where the tree takes me. What do you think?

Once I get them cleaned up I'll post a few pictures and maybe you can throw some ideas my way. My son already claimed two of them.

I'm thinking of using one of the Grey Owls for a Tanuki project I've been planning. I already have an awesome piece of deadwood to work with.

I think it really depends on what front you choose and that would be hard to say without getting a good look at the roots. I would definitely do some air layering though, just not sure where. If your picture ended up being the intended front, I think you hit it on the head. Removing the left and right branches would give you some really nice movement for an informal upright.

Keep us updated on this guy next Spring!
