A Mountain of a Project

What size trees do you see in this composition?

First. Wow.

Second. I think this will look awesome viewed from far, with the peak exposed. I don't know what scale that is. But very small trees, hell Even cuttings. Its a full size mountain to me.

I really appreciate the effort you put, an intend to put, in this project.

John G's One of a kinders!

Played with placing a few trees on the mountain this morning....

Shimpaku, azalea, kingsville box, kotohime j. Maple, dwarf elm....about 25 trees currently but will probably add 10 or so more if I end up going this direction.

Do you do anything small?!!! Putting all the containerized trees onto that rock shows just how enormous it is. Yow. Do you have a specific place that you are drawing this inspiration from? Seems like it may be too many varieties to me, but you may be able to make it work. Amazing.

Thanks Judy....yes I do have an issue with large plantings,,,,but I grow lots of small stuff for the rocks!

No specific inspiration...as I mentioned earlier just a bunch of Chinese landscape pix in my mind....

I have lots of 1 and 2 species plantings so this time I would like to do something with a few more just for fun!

John, I feel like the trees take away from the natural beauty of the rock compilation too much. Not sure what the answer is whether it is less trees or smaller, but in my opinion the rock compilation is stunning by itself. Very inspiring.

I almost feel wired saying this because maples are my favorite... But I think the Kotohime are the ones that don't work well in that group. Something about the size maybe? I think I agree with Drew- less is more when you have a stunning rock pile like this! A few small ones scattered higher up... Bent over, tortured looking little Juniper or Mame sized Pines maybe... Some really small leafed azaleas and Boxwoods down low? I am sure you will find the best fit!

Where did you get your rock? I have been looking for some for projects of my own. Nothing quite that grand a scale though.

Thank you for the comment Drew! I do appreciate the sentiment. I'm going to plant this one! I personally don't like to see the seems between the stones and by planting this I will be able to fill in and moss those seems. I also think that once the trees are "settled" in the look will change significantly.
Thanks again...
John

Hey Robert.... Check your local aquarium stores or eBay for stone called lace rock. I brought in a pallet of this from feller stone in Utah.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I've tried just about everyplace else I can think of. Your project looks awesome, by the way. I can't wait to see it as it progresses.

Hey, thanks! I don't go to B'ham often, but I go through on a regular basis. Next time I will try to plan a side trip.

I'll try. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time lately. My mother died a month ago and my brother-in-law and I are building a "Tiny House" for my brother. He is disabled and has always lived with our mother and can't aford to stay in their place. There was no insurance to speak of so we are working on a tight budget and doing all the work ourselves. It makes for some long weekends driving to Enterprise Al working all weekend and driving back.

I stopped by my local Aquarium shop after work yesterday and found that they do carry some Lace Rock (and other types of rock), and at a good price. I managed to pick up a couple of pieces that I might be able to do something with. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for but I will check back regularly and maybe they will get the perfect piece.

John my friend I think old age is clouding your analytical abilities. If you clearly set down and look at the facts surrounding this monument, it design, creation and maintenance I'm sure that you would agree with my assessment that it would be much easier and less painful if you would just move up to the mountains. Why you could even bother Arthur on a daily basis.

(Thanks for giving us inspiration with education. Keep us up to date.)

Hey, sorry for your loss. Also, good luck with your brother and the home building. You've got a lot on your hands.

Thanks! That's actually why I took up Bonsai again. I needed something to occupy my mind as well as my hands in my down time. Something to relieve some stress. I've always been fascinated with Bonsai and actually had messed around with it some. So I started reading books (I think I have 8 right now) and then started collecting trees. It's been a good stress reliever.
