So having fallen from the horse, I'm hoping this will help me get back in the saddle. Picked this up from the Bonsai Learning Center fellows at the PBA event last Friday. Just a before and after. Hope you like. This is a tree with many fronts. I'm waiting for foliage to fill out on the other side until it can be seen from, I believe, 3 angles. Plan is to use a shari to help "fix" the reverse taper on the lower trunk. Cheers.

Nice job. Only way to recover after falling or getting bucked is to climb back on that horse!

Nice work...for the thickness of the trunk I see a much shorter tree. (just in case the smiley is wrong...I meant I am mad)

Nice work. Just some food for thought. Another way to lessen the effect of the reverse taper is to lean the trunk. In this case, you would need to tilt the tree to the right. However, that first branch on the left is probably too stiff to make tilting a viable option.

No need for anger dear. :) I appreciate your input and will consider what branches I have to see if it's a possibility. Thank you.

I appreciate the input. I'll check on the possibility of bending that branch this evening and view it at a new angle. Thank you.

Wow! What a nice tree and a great job by you in seeing what was inside of all of that foliage. I think you have a keeper there!

Personally, I think this tree is beautiful just as is. A little fill in and that's it. Also, raising the soil line just a tad bit will hide the reverse taper. If the tree exhibitied and moss is added, there will not be any sign of reverse taper. I think by trying different angles or trying to cut anything else, this tree will not look any better. I say, if it's not broken, don't fix it. Once again, beautiful tree.

Well thank you VERY kindly. I looked to your juniper threads for inspiration as I styled this tree. Your shohin work inspires. Means a lot coming from you. Perhaps a tapered, taller pot would be a good fit in a few years. I'm content to leave it in this can for the next few while it fills in. Thanks for the well-received suggestion.

An absolutely incredible transformation. I just keep looking at the images over and over trying to see what you cut and where you placed each branch. I feel like I'll never get there.

Pretty tree you found there Berob! I think, like October, perhaps dont try to make it better at this point. I know it's hard to stop sometimes, but this one is pretty special.
I worked on a similar one with Arthur Joura Saturday, but it is not as nice as what you found. Keen eye my man! And by the way, I asked Arthur about repotting mine from a similar nursery can, and he said no rush. Let it settle from the abuse I inflicted and see what happens in a year.

Well thank you Steve. If you can keep em alive, you're already more "there" than I. Keep your fingers in foliage and eyes on examples is all I can offer. You'll get there if you want it bad enough. I'm still trying myself brother.

Thank bud! Yeah, those NC boys brought good stock. They had this trees twin already partially styled... What fun is that? I'm content to let it rest. It's nice to have something on the bench that's still green! Did you already post up that juniper on your PBA thread? I'd love to see it.

I did not mean I am angry...I meant that I must be mad (=crazy I think english problems...not angry) to want this well styled tree shortened.
I agree with Rob...I also like it just the way it is.You have done a good job. Not all trees need to be sumo/
You can sort out the reverse taper with the shari...just that it will take time. To enlarge the trunk just do it at the bottom first and for faster results do two...one in front and one befind...and dont change the pot soon.

Some pot options?

Rob

And goodbye reverse taper. I like these pot options and was actually looking around yesterday at what I had vs what I wanted in the future. Then remembered that it'd be a couple years before this thing saw a pot but YES. Absolutely. And right on!

Thanks, Rob.

The tree will be stunning after it is put in a pot and some shari added. The pots I picked were more to get a feel for picking a shape and not necessarily color or pattern. I look forward to future updates on this tree.

I've been away for awhile here, just time to look in quickly recently, so maybe I missed something????
Anyhoo, nice little tree, and great job getting it there. Good progress in your work brob.
