A little before and after from a demo I did on Saturday with my Sensei, and an assist from another long time student of his, Ernie Hasan from Phoenix.

Should I develop the main fork on this JM or delete one? Plan to develop, but deciduous is not my niche.

Bit late in the spring for collecting, but it is an elm so it shouldn't miss a beat. Found my new honey hole for next year, an old abandoned quarry a couple miles from home.

The soil is pretty much bonsai soil size in some areas.

The winged elms in the quarry are heavily winged.

And the American elm I collected. Potted it up in an Anderson flat in some used bonsai soil i had handy from my ponderosa repot.

I ran to the nursery to see what they had in stock. Resisted the urge to buy a $160 landscape Japanese white pine. I'll cry about it later. My fiancée was proud of me. Came home with a $20 barberry to go in a shohin display with my Japanese Black pines.

Repotted the California costal redwood chonk I bought for my mom and then rescued from her. First bonsai pot for this guy. It could probably use a thread. Still working on getting the roots under control. There is one large root remaining. If I can get better feeder roots this year I can remove it next year. $6.99 redwood in a tube after 8 years of neglect.

3rd snake I've found under my anderson flats while moving them this year, all brown snakes so far...beats copperheads. Gonna go dig a couple more elms today I think. Found a decent American elm with nice corky bark the other day.

Today, I did first my root pruning as a newbie, in order to move two junipers (one is horizontalis, the other is pfitzeriana) from nursery pots to training pots with inorganic soil. Pfitzeriana had so much roots, so I had to remove 30 % in order to fit into the training pot. I did not remove much from the horizontalis, I only removed a few thick roots that were surrounding other roots Meanwhile, I ended up barerooting 50 % of the remaining roots on both trees.

I hope I didn't do anything wrong. 🙄🙄

I'm not saying that I want to genocide eastern cotton tail rabbits, but I am saying that I will not stand in the way of owls doing it for me. I am trying to install native grasses. Last year was a grind against bold and arrogant bunnies. Now I only see one and he's walking on eggshells at all times. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

My cattle dog is doing her best to give every baby bunny that comes through the fence into our backyard a heart attack.

It was two days ago, but I dug up this old super old Boxwood. No idea what I'm shooting for, but I couldn't let it just go to the trash.
