One year progress on a Hornbeam from nursery material.
All the primary lines are set now and some secondary branching.
I may hollow out the rest of the trunk..

Hornbeam are an exceptional bonsai subject, you must definitely have a few in your collection.
This one by Will baddely, with similar material, a pretty boring straight trunk but two substantial low branches to cut back to.

Just look for trees with low branches, makes it all the more enjoyable and drastically shortens the time before you have something nice to look at.

For the UK members, I bought the tree from Dobbie's. Dobbies Garden Centres https://www.dobbies.com/

Ye Old Hornbeam went down in the storm, on a blustery winters night...

Once stood majestic, Green and proud. The storms got stronger, until my roots could hold no longer. I rocked and swayed like never before, I could feel myself heading towards the ground...

But the journey is just beginning, I shall come back stronger than ever before...

As I lay down I thrust my limbs into the ground and re anchored myself and all my branches rose up like multiple trunks, reaching for the sky...

Did this tree actually get damaged or did you lay it over on purpose?
I did lay it over. After removing a dead root in the base I became less interested with it, the base wasn't great as an upright tree. I feel like this revamp makes use of all attributes, plus gives an opportunity to create a larger, taller, more interesting composition and a thriving ecosystem.
I love rafts, I feel like this could be a good one. The bridge is a cool feature as is the two mature branches which go into the soil and come back out, it gives the illusion that the tree has become rooted. You see this in forests where trees have gone down.
