Wow, root over carDealt with a different type of trunk chop - this one by Mother Nature. Ripped all wires out of the house and landed on the back of my car. Seemed like a good excuse to stay home and continue with the repotting.

Wait you guys are only working 40 hours?Geez, Am I the only one around here has to work 40 hours a week?![]()
thank you... super informative... it did ring the bell as I was reading through your messageNo, it's about large branch/leader removal. Ebihara would cut large notches and use the continued sap flow to the sacrifice branch/leader to help heal the remainder faster than otherwise. I figured it would be worth trying on these hornbeams because they're so reluctant to close wounds. On the trunk side of each cut, I've put a thin painted-on layer of Kirikuchi, then covered it in with aluminum foil tape. Kinda throwing every wound healing trick in the book at these trees to see how they do. Eventually, the remainder is cut off and you've got a smaller wound to heal than otherwise

Ebihara's maples - Bonsai Tonight
While Boon, Peter Tea and I were poking around Ishii's nursery outside of Nagoya last year, we came across a number of great Japanese maples. They lookedbonsaitonight.com

Second times a charm... a second repot as I wasn't happy with the placement of the first one.

Lessons learned ... are never failures. Just stepping stones. One of the main reasons I am more strictly doing 4 point tiedowns is this tree. Honestly, I am surprised it's alive. Partway through the growing season last year it flopped over and was laying sideways. It was wired into the pot but the root mat was not substantial enough to keep it upright so I piled potting soil over the roots and propped it up a little with a rock. I should really compost this guy but if they want to fight then I can let it recover and try wiring it to look decent.
