Sean’s Trident Projects

You’re a mad scientist! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen this before. Good job!

I don’t think I’ve posted this tree before. It was started with 5 collected seedlings that I tied together. One of the seedlings died and was replaced the following spring. That seedling died too so I ended up approach grafting a shoot to the base to make the 5th trunk yet again.
Repotted into the only pot I had that would fit the bulbous root base, it’s basically touching the sides of the inside of the pot just below the soil line!

The graft that will be used to build the 5th trunk is the lowest, thinnest one on the lower right. There are 2 buds waiting to grow just below the cut.

ROR dug from the grow bed. This one struggled a bit 2 seasons ago after I cut the main trunk back. It took ages to respond. I also realised that the top of the trunk had died off, I believe from sun burn after I cut all of the canopy off. Last season I started trying to heal the resultant wound, I’ll keep chipping away at it. I have hope it will heal completely eventually.

Found an early photo of when I first put this tree together

One of my bigger tridents started swelling buds so I dug it up from the grow bed and put it in a pot. 5 root grafts were added to fill in some bare spots

That's a nice fat boy. What's the plan with this one, are you going for a sumo or bigger size tree

Another day, another ROR trident dug up and worked.

The small shoots low down on the trunk near the rock are from an approach graft that I performed during the season to add a branch to become the next section of trunk. I did the graft while the tree was in my grow bed and I’m not entirely happy with it so I thread grafted a new seedling today to form the new trunkline and used another branch off the same seedling the add a low first branch. I didn’t take photos after the grafting, will update my thread in the morning.

Photos are before any root work, I cut everything back to within the rim of the plastic disk.

Dug my last trident out of the grow bed for the season. This is a big guy. I’m super chuffed with how it’s developed.
After the photos I did an approach graft on the backside of the tree to hopefully add a low depth branch, and wired up the little shoot at the top of the trunk to grow the next section of the tree.

First cutback and partial defoliation of one of my trident RORs. I’m really pleased with how it’s developing. I’ll start developing the apex this season now that the apical leader has been cut back. I’m happy with the movement and taper through the trunk, time to start building some twigs!
