Looking into Tamarind too, Might be a little closer looking to BRT. I'm having a hard time getting seeds to germinate though.
I was going to put this tree in a grow box but decided to re pot it into a large pot that I was going to use for another tree. Will keep it in this pot for a couple of years then put it back into a smaller pot that fits the tree well. Hopping it will like the bigger pot and get some good growth the next couple of years. After it settles into this pot I will do some needed trimming and some wiring.

Why bungee the tree? The pot is one thing, but the tree.........please tell me it's wired in and your just being REALLY cautious!?!?

This tree was in a smaller pot for many years over to one side. The roots grew in a circle to the side with more soil. When I would repot the tree even with wire was not stable due to very few roots on the one side. After the tree fell off the stand and broke the pot last year and I put it closer to the center it started to get better roots on the shallow side. One more year and simply wiring it in will do. I get LOTS of wind out back. Will keep the bungee on for a few weeks is all.Why bungee the tree? I wire all the trees. This tree is top heavy and catches a lot of wind. Bungee is just a little extra. Last repot I used wire instead of a bungee.
The last re pot I wired it to give it a little more hold till the soil settles in. The bungee works much better for me. Sticking chop sticks into the root ball then wire around the chop sticks works but the bungee is super simple.

I defoliated mine, it came back quite quickly.
Clipping the terminal bud while the internodes are short helps keep it compact.what's the secret to get the leaves so close together on a BRT?

Just took these pictures. This is an example of a new shoot growing out past the lower pad.Can you please post a pic?

Trimming it back even to the pad. Normally I would just trim it back to the level of the pad but wanted to show you the clipping of the terminal bud. In the picture it is the lighter coler grren clump that was just trimmed.
This is the end result of doing this over and over again. I've never defoliated. Every winter it seems to do it on its own.

Mine needs a good cleaning up once it's warm and outside again. But I read you have to be careful about leaving a nub at the end longer than you want, because it will die back some. Mine has really long internodes at the moment, but I don't want to trim it too far back, if it will die back even further.

Exactly. You can go back once it turns brown and clean it up. Careful for TOO much cutting of green growth, "pinching".... @c54fun tree is styled in a manner that doesn't call for a overly thick trunk. Although I would let some shoots lignify a bit and then cut back. Consistent "pinching" will weaken the tree, all trees.
Thanks! It's gotten very leggy over the winter, maybe I should just leave it alone? It's one of my favorites, so I want to be careful what I do. But yours and c54fun's are so lushExactly.
