How do you guys handle these squirrels?…

There is no universal answer. My squirrels chew on smooth barked trees like maples and elms, but leave junipers, pines and boxwoods alone for the most part. I have some trees in cages. I have some trunks wrapped in wire mesh.

I've trapped, shot, killed about 18 squirrels in the past year. My yard will be clear for a week before new squirrels move into to space. So, you not only have to get rid of your squirrels, but all the squirrels in the neighborhood to achieve peace. Not likely to happen.

We generally find 5 or 6 copperheads and year in our yard...and a timber rattlesnakes every few years. Snakes do seem to work. Woods all around us, and never seen a squirrel in my bonsai trees. The birds like to dig the soil out of my pots and steal my moss though.

I'd seriously try a predator decoy out.

Update this morning,

Squirrel tore off a 6" new growth shoot from one of my hawthorns, dragged it about 6 feet, then left it.

Does anyone know why they would do this? I understand the digging (bury and retrieve acorns), but not the branch pulling.

I have a squirrel nest 30ft from all my tree’s. I saved a baby after a hawk attacked the nest once. I don’t know why these squirrels don’t bother my trees. I do throw some nuts out here and there. Mainly to give the chipmunks something. It’s not enough to cause an infestation. Rodents are territorial so I think it has caused them to defend the territory because I only feed enough for one or two at most. Before I did this they were a problem. I also have a healthy ecosystem of predators too. Which is the primary factor I believe. I see raptors regularly attacking prey in the back. And 5-6ft racers as well

I think the predator decoy could be a first attempt. But move it around from time to time. Maybe a fake snake and a raptor. It may work it may not. Removing the squirrel just opens up territory for another. Whether alive or dead.

Isn’t there a scent they don’t like? There are many options but you have to try them and see what sticks.

Back when I lived in Whittier in LA county I noticed the squirrels are vicious. They were extremely territorial and always fighting. Where I live I think there are more resources to go around so they don’t seem so vicious.

You have maybe 4 options if you dont want to kill them:

1. Give them food they will prefer more than your trees, and don't let it run out. Afterwards they will still dig out the soil, plant acorns etc in your pots and may still remove the bark from your trees because squirrels are dicks.

2. Live traps, release them far away. A few miles is probably not enough. But I still think you are better off killing all of them...they are rodents and reproduce quite fast. They have two litters per year, 1 to 8 babies per litter, and wean in about 10 weeks. You won't put much of a dent in the population, if any. Gabler is correct, they are tasty. As far as the meat being dry, the key is to pressure cook it before frying it. If you don't own an instant pot, you are missing out. I'm sure there are some great recipes out there that explain it better.

3. As stated above, wrap your trees up in their own personal jail cell to protect them from the squirrels.

4. Predator decoys. Whatever the major squirrel predators are in your area, get a couple of decoys and hope they scare them off. Also can get a house cat for outside around your house, they'll kill them for you. My ex wife had an outside cat that purged my entire property of squirrels.
Alot of work relocating squirrels lol jyst feel bad for them, remind me of my cat lmao

My jade was completely girdled by squirrels. They also ripped off a large branch.

They are constantly digging up my soil, eating my organic fertilizers, knocking my smaller tress down, etc.. It is ridiculous. There are so many of them, that I struggle to keep them under control.
I have much less issues, thank God, but they do fuck up all the nice displays and everything. For me it's just one really fat one that i recognize, that i someone's feeding a lot so he hides shit and I believe one ore.

I am going to get a suppressor for a 22 rifle and take care of it. The ones in my backyard don't just dig, they chew on the branches too.

Perhaps my squirrels are not as vicious as some others, but I've had good luck jamming a bunch of broken bamboo skewers in the soil, pointed up, a little squirrel punji field. I also have a few predatory birds in the neighborhood, bald eagles, cooper's hawk, red-tailed hawk, I think I heard a red-shouldered as well not too long ago, and great-horned and barred owls, which may help to make squirrels less bold. Mostly the squirrels in my yard are more interested in trying to get into my bird feeders.

The ones in my backyard gnaw and scratch on the pressure treated fencepost. I think they're doing some kind of grooming, cleaning, or honing of teeth/claws. I'm stumped for other logical reasons for them to regularly do this.

My only effective solution has been to put wire mesh over the top of my pots. It's not pretty, but I can't seem to deter them without physical prevention.

Yea this is what ive been doin plus some commercial one that fit perfectly too. I plant to just fence off an area pretty much...

I have a Kania trap. It kills the little bastards. Their web site appears to be down. However, HERE'S ANOTHER TRAP.

We also have bald eagles. They're taking care of squirrels, snakes, cats, the occasional chihuahua, and other prey. I don't know how to attract bald eagles to your area. We just got lucky.

My dogs seem to do a good job as deterrent for them.
Dont really get them in my back yard much.
I get birds tossing moss around looking for bugs if I put moss on the pots which I dont any more because of the birds.
Now I just get the bad moss growing on its own and the birds dont seem to bother with that for some reason

instant relocation lol yea i thought about deterrent but wasn't sure if they work?
I've read about some that have good reviews, but who knows. I've never tried it. (expensive)

List of smells squirrels dislike, Apple cider vinegar, peppermint, garlic, chili peppers, & predator urine. Not sure if they sell that. how would they collect it? synthetic predator urine?

I did the apple cider vinegar a bit last year, and it seemed to help until I forgot to reapply after a rain.

Pellet rifle. This year alone they have chewed the powder coating of my pool furniture, chewed my trim work on my pool arbor and chewed the aluminum wire that holds my chain link fence to upper post in half about 75 ft. area. We have woods on our property and the neighbors behind us have pecan trees. It is a constant battle every year. My wife won't cook them she says their rodents:)20210607_194241 - Copy.jpg

Leave it to my state…
