What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

I've a hard time finding them myself, that's why I took a chance on this one. I've also read that air layering is either really hard or really easy. 🤷‍♂️
Mine are originating from . Iseli nursery . To get past the trouble of trying to import a tree . I ordered blind from a nursery that deals with them . ( they only sell commercial ) I did receive info from iseli that . There JWP are all grafted onto mugo . I have heard the same as you about . Air layer . So my plan is simple . A get tree known cultivar. See what I get . Grow it air layer small sections . And learn about air layering them . And possible air layer the complete tree if needed down the road . If I’m successful . Back of my mind is replace the foliage. On collected . EWP

I bought a Japanese White Pine online. I knew it was grafted, and was told by the seller that you can't see the graft. So, I took my chances and this is what I got.

Isn't that the graft right there?

What can I do with that? Bury it? Air layer? I know wrong thread and all. I think I'm done buying anything sight unseen. Not a happy camper ⛺😞
In my view that is an excellent low graft that will all but disappear when the tree barks up. I would be thrilled with that starting point for a grafted JWP. Just saying!

Thanks, that makes me feel better about it. :) I'm inexperienced with grafts in general & it's good to hear that it will get better in time. I was comparing that JWP to the pictures on the website I got it from, so I was a little put off when I got this one. Thank you, now I don't feel so bad about the sight unseen purchase. :)

Thanks...majority are in favor. I was surprised more UK friends were less in favor than the USA ones. But that's also fine. I love it isn't for everyone. Only in private have they said their thoughts. And truly polite about it. I knew going in. It was going to be controversial. Shoot the tree itself is hard for some to swallow. 🙂
I watched an hour long documentary in French about Burton style. I’m IMPRESSED and it is fascinating and beautiful to me.

Waiting on Jacks pumice to come back in stock in a couple weeks. This normally comes in 3 gallon bags but the pine bark and Monto clay came in three 1 gallon bags this time.
Also got some Clonex. Does the gel have a given shelf life?
All I find is 3212. Hoping it's not dated like tires and made August 2012. I have received out dated K-L-N before.

I am not sure about the shelf life dating, however I keep the Clonex in the fridge and it has been effective for several years. I have not noticed a change. Which is a good thing because one does not use a lot for cuttings or even painting it on air layers it goes a long way. Once it has been applied, let it dry on the site for a while before sticking the cutting or placing damp material around it in an air layer. That gives it time to adhere and be taken in at the site. Just a detail for consideration.
from the manufacturer.
"Clonex Gel is guaranteed for two years if best practices are followed. Best practices include not dipping directly in the Clonex bottle and storing your Clonex in the refrigerator when it’s not in use. The rooting hormone in Clonex is still active if the product is liquefied, but if the gel has turned a grayish color then the hormone is no longer viable."

Huh I guess I missed the pine bark on that site. I just ran out of PB yesterday.

He's been sending 1 gal bags as of mid-last year. The only ones I have received in the big bags were the custom mix. I think he may have created too many 1 gal and they were taking too much space. I think I received 6 gals of Monto and 6 gals of Bonsai Block in 1 gal bags last year. I just received the 7.5 gals monto/bonsai block.

His pine bark is decent, I used it a while back before going all inorganic, but I think there are too many fines at once in a while. Orchiata, while more expensive is a better quality bark.

You can carve out the scar with an exact-o knife to reopen the edges of the wound and put cutpaste over it to work towards healing it over. Repeat when the healing stops.
I've also made some parallel slits in the bark with an exact-o knife to create scar tissue that helps blend the bark differences.

Where is our society at . When fertilizer . Like my man made plastic fishing worms. Need a safety disclaimer that says do not eat this product . 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
When I was a kid my mom left a bowl of what looked like cinnamon and sugar on the kitchen counter so I licked my finger, stuck it in the bowl and popped my finger in my mouth just as my mom was walking in the kitchen. She yelled at me to spit it out (it taste like burning) scooped me up and water-borded me under the faucet so i could rinse my mouth out. There are situations where fertilizer can look like food. I was also around 5 years old at the time.

Biogold looks like fancy dog food so I can see if you weren't familiar with the brand name and you found a bag in someone's house they could mistake it for something else.

im a ford dealership auto tech for a living . My bosses 1928 model A ford has a owners manual that tells you how to maintain the engine . Including how to disassemble and adjust the valve train , a 2024 owners manual tells you not to drink the fluid in the battery . I stand by my statement

To be fair though, today's cars are a lot more complicated than a 1928 model A and you need special training to know how to handle all the different systems or be able to disassemble parts of the engine beyond simple things like an oil change.

First thing I think of when I see a new 2024 car is “I wonder what the battery taste like “ 😂😂

Yea I agree anyone would be pretty dumb to drink the battery fluid....lmao.
However with the rise of tick tok challenges and the like in recent years....not sure Id put it past someone to do something that stupid

This new generation has no chill and sadly, I’m seeing the world portrayed in the 2006 Mike judge film “idiocracy” looking more and more like our future. Before you know it this is going to be bonsainut 🤦‍♂️

With some of the over the top experiments some folks around here are doing, I think we'll scare most of those types back to Reddit.

I will say this on the battery fluid thing, though: I have run into an old timer or two who swore by tasting this or that fluid to be sure you had the dilution ratios right back in the day.🤷

That one in the 90s where the woman sued McDonald's for the coffee being too hot? Learned while researching it for a PR class in college that it was totally legit. She got rear-ended in the parking lot, the coffee went over, and she got 2nd degree burns from navel to kneecaps, including the places they tell you curling irons shouldn't go.😬

Still doesn't answer the curling iron question, though.🤔
