I recall seeing a something on TV when I was little explaining how during WWII the Japanese were able to withstand allied bombing of their industry because so much of their industry actually took place in little shops like this. Awfully hard to target a factory rolling out rifles when it's spread across 500 people's garages.
This sends the point home. If America's industry had a bit more of this going on we'd be living a very different reality.

And, God are those machines impressive! Most of his shop doesn't even need electricity!

Thanks for sharing!

If I recall correctly, we used to have cottage industry in the States, but 19th century tycoons lobbied for laws that made it difficult or illegal to work from home, so everyone had to get a job at the factory.

I'm uncertain about that in the 19th century, but it's definitely been happening for the past 100 years.
In the 90s there was big to-do about oil companies lobbying for minimum EPA fines in the millions for the sorts of accidents BP has every day. Put under every petroleum producer making less $10 million a year. The regional healthcare monopolies that dominate that industry are the ones lobbying for crackdowns on insurance companies, and all the regulations requiring you jump through hoops to see a specialist that you're required to see in order to be treated for something simple resulting in twice as many Dr visits, all while simultaneously fighting any efforts to repeal the 1953 law that makes them immune to antitrust laws.
Things to remember next time a big CEO talks about how we need a $15 minimum wage.

Just saying, follow the money.

BTW, did you know that after Ross Perot won 2 states in the '93 election stealing the win from good old Bill in favor of Bush, but after the Clinton campaign sued saying the electoral votes were wasted on a losing 3rd party the supreme court overturned the election results in those states? Also the Independent Party surpassed the required 3% of the popular vote needed to get funding from the Presidential Campaign Fund, then the Senate immediately passed a law raising the threshold to 5%.
Sorta the same thing that happened in '08 when the company that runs the presidential debates enacted a policy banning 3rd parties from the debates, and any candidate that engaged in a debate with a 3rd party would also be banned, as well as the network the hosted that debate.

Ok, I'm done now. My apologies for politicizing the thread.

Seriously, foot powered metal working machines. That is awesome! I love it!

Quite the soldering iron.
I am a qualified welder and I always wandered how they were able to solder those joints without any heat distortion. I knew they used a principle like the old school lead sled cars where they fill all the gaps with lead, but that would still distort the thin copper. Now I can see how they "cold braze" the tin into the groove, very ingenious. I would love to know what kind of flux they use.

The fact that the responsive post was marked as "edited" leads me to believe it may just be a garden-variety human scammer. The cadence of the broken English at first led me to believe it was a bot, but it might just be someone who isn't proficient in the language.

It appears whatever this is censors itself from profanity and is also susceptible to typos.

I don't mind one way or the other as long as it doesn't try to take my money or trees
