Okay folks,

we noted over the years [ 1988 to present ] that J,B,pine seeds
would be say, 30 planted - 25 or so germinate, and 5 to 10 would
grow very well.
The rest would slowly die/fade.

So we want to test an idea.
The whole world was once Sub-Tropical and the genes for
sub-tropics should still be on the chain.

We are going to test the idea on White Pines.
Will seed germinate and thrive that are Tropical ?

Birds have been passing over Trinidad for centuries.
They have left the Fustic [ Chlorophora t.] as seed in their
poop.
This tree grows i zone 9 Argentina, and is now a lumber wood
down here.

Perhaps we might get lucky.
We did have a white pine seedling for 2 years, but someone
ate the head.
We also have what was sold to us as Japanese Red pine seed.
all save one died.
Wish us luck.
Good Day

The idea is interesting but there’s one caveat. Earth has been warmer but it has been colder as well. Most of nowadays fauna and Flora actually appeared in a time when Earth was a much colder place. This is why most species have a greater tolerance range towards lower temperatures than higher ones. So I think that, for the most part, your underlying assumption is wrong.

Gustavo thanks for the correction.
So do I say the life forms didn't evolve from older life forms ?

Alexandra, I thought from the position of the word.
That was my name in Greek:D
Guess these old episodes of Xena are not helping.o_O

@Anthony i think it’s worthwhile looking into which tree species have become invasive in non native territories and compare those conditions and climate with their native area.
Of course that is human error, but also as you said (and I think you mentioned it before in other posts) birds fly everywhere and they poop everywhere.
I think all trees can handle a hot climate, Alaska has had a heatwave or 2 that pushed temperatures close to 40C once or twice.
But the big thing that a lot of the big dogs mention here is winter dormancy. If the northern guys can build a greenhouse to keep our trees warm, I’m sure we can do something to keep northern trees cool enough to rest in winter. Or we can convince those trees that our winters are adequate for dormancy. I’m looking forward to your findings.

I think there's a hiatus in the way.
One time at school, we put GFPuv genes in bacteria so they started to shine bright green when we put them under UV lights.
The GFPuv gene comes from a jellyfish.

The bacteria that had the gene, thought of it as a giant backpack. It was heavy, it took a lot of time, resources and energy. We had to activate the gene to keep it in the bacteria. Otherwise they would cut it out of their genome within 6-15 generations. Which took a day or two.

Plants do this in the same way. Though slower and taking more generations. This means that genes can be removed naturally, because they're never used.
Natural selection criteria; if they're never met, the genes either disappear or mutate to change function.
Italian scots pines have lost (or never evolved) the genes to resist certain northern european fungi. I have read they don't get old around here, but they do have the smallest needles. So I'm going for it.

The only way to find out if it works, is either genetic screening (140+ bucks per gene, per sample) or by experimenting.

I'd say: go for it! I always love experiments.
If possible, also look for more tropical species like the korean JBP. It's the same stuff, but more accustomed to other climates.

I'm interested to read how this develops.

Kevin,

we use the ceiling limit of able to handle 33 deg.C
If able to handle that temp. for an hour it can grow
down here.

The sageretia t, is a hedge and zone 7 for outdoors
China.
On our side it is an under shade shrub.
The shade tree has the lowest branches set at 30 feet [ 9.1 m ]
morning and evening light and from Christmas until February
no sunlight. Just bright light.
Allows the shrubs to rest. [ growing since 1980]

We have one sageretia, in the earth growing through a shade tree.

Our light will destroy paint tested for outdoor [ Miami / Arizona ]

So some sub-tropicals become shade trees down here.
Just try.

Oh by the way pine seedling contort very well.
Shh - don't tell Sifu, I said this [ Adair ] use wire.

You may have to use a food grade epoxy on the inside or the
coconut and around holes. To get the pot to last.
Try a concrete pot, use a bowl as a mould. Soak for 6 weeks in
water to cure.
Imagine.
Good Day
Anthony

* coconut shells make cool dolphins and parts for a wind chime
with bamboo for chimes / music.
Got one outside.[ Chinese origin - naturally ]
