Zelkova

@Osoyoung,@sorce .Yes,if I knew what I was doing when I first started,I would have more.Trust me,I tossed some beloved trees back to the heap in the back of the yard.
It actually took me awhile to realize what I actually wanted.
I realized with such small trees it is good to wire as you go all the time.

It's a Zero.... @0soyoung ....
A Damn zero.

Managable must be good!
Cuz these are dope!

Sorce

I was expecting to hear somewhere around 50. I'm gonna make (5) brooms is probably more manageable.:p
The layer in post 161 has good bones.
Yea I am at work on lunch now.yes that is a nice and straight one.#147 is looking good too.I will post a pic tonight.
Honestly ,with proper wiring these will all be keepers.I like layers better than seedling. With seedlings you can start so many more though and pic and choose.
Thanks!

I'm still just gobsmacked o_O.
I started with 8 plus 4 spares. I have now killed 3. But I'm still just doing geeky things and not actually pushing to catch up with you (yet :p).

Here is the one from post #147 I was looking at last night.
It actually made me decide to make more of these.
I have a straight whip in the ground almost an inch thick that is getting layered real soon.
Will be at the bottom of a tree in excess of 6 feet tall.Should layer in a matter of day's,though I am going to let the roots develop slightly more.Do them earlier in the season to allow more growth this season.
I just like how tall this tree is.Looks better in person.
I got a better game plan with this batch of trees.
Thanks for looking!image.jpeg

Whoops,wobbly trees.

These layers are great, but the root pad is not developed enough to stand a stiff wind with leaves on them.
I came home today and two of 4 were laying over.
I have no choice but to devise an anchor system that will be a little cumbersome, but effective.
Should be easier to wire in the pot next season with thicker and more developed roots.

Ahem... Cough, cough...

Perhaps you may have missed it... About 100 posts ago, I mentioned screwing them to a board.

Really... I don't make this stuff up!

I guarantee I would of split the thing in half trying to drill a screw into the bottom of this tiny tree.
I do like hearing your advice though.:p Thanks
I am making another real soon with almost a 1" trunk.I will consider it with that one,but I am going to have to drill a pilot hole or something.
I still say a stiff wind will blow it over when full of leaves......maybe I will not.
I think I like my garden stake method better. It is just till the roots get woody, then I can use the method that BVF showed me.

Yes, I drilled a pilot hole into the one I did that had a trunk about the size of a pencil. Yours is thicker. Even then, I did split the trunk a tiny bit.

The tree didn't miss a beat. Where it split, it healed. And it actually helped make the buttress better.

If you go back and look at some old books, they used to intensionally split the bases of them, and drive in little wedges! Bury it down a couple inches, it will heal over in a month!

Here: I know you don't believe me:

Those itty bitty roots would never have been able to hold that tree up by wiring them down.

another way is to use some thicker wire, wrap around the trunk and fix the wire to the pot.
put the wire through the whole and have it long enough so you can bend it over the rim of the pot.
i dont have pic with me now, but i guess you get what i mean?

Yeah, that would work, but not as well as screwed to a board. Plus, you get that Ebihara thing going, too.

This Zelkova has small leaves.I defoliated 3times last season.More twigs means smaller leaves,I guess.
I am going to wire this tree again.I do not care if it takes multiple sessions.will definately be time consuming.
@Adair M .Glad you reminded me about the Craftsy on wiring. It does not seem so daunting now.
Everyone else, definately watch the craftsy on wiring on Colin Lewis bonsai website.

Here is the link for those interested. I'm leaving this here as a reminder for myself as well as others ;)

What a great little tree, Adair! Do you have a thread on this one yet?
No, sorry.

And I don't have any more pictures. I repotted it at a workshop I was teaching. And one of the participants really, really liked it, so I sold it.

Took some photos tonight.
I have definately noticed a more slower growth with this feeding regime this year.I like to see where this goes,so going to let leaves completely harden for awhile and see what happens.I see shoot pruning and detail wiring in the future, maybe a defoliation too.
I have a grow bed full of lush 2 year old zelkova cuttings, very vigorous.
I have decided to make Moyogi Zelkova from these.
Not extremely big.Trunks are an inch now.Possibly next year or so for the first chop.
I will actually air layer the finished product when the last leader is extended far out.
That way do not have to worry about what the roots are doing under the ground and development should be speedy too.
Here is the link I am following for some help with branch selection and procedure. http://www.bonsai4me.com/AdvTech/ATdevelopingtrunksforbonsai.htm

Here are pictures of Zelkova #11 and my grow bed full of future Moyogi:D
