I couldn't find an earlier thread on this tree on Bnut, but it's development from a volunteer is here.

Anyway, it's growing like crazy, from every square inch of live tissue. The decay seems to be under control for the moment and is becoming a feature, and the primary branches have been identified. As the branches develop with some movement and taper, it may become a decent bonsai.

Here are a few shots from this morning's haircut...it's 3rd this year!

Great character in this one! I love the base.

Brian, nice looking tree already. This is going to be a spectacular Bonsai when it all flushed out with growth. Has it bloomed for you yet?

Nice trunk and base.

You might want to address the almost perfect round trunk above the 1st branch...it doesn't match the character of the lower trunk. Maybe give it same carving treatment (in lesser degree) as the base?

Not sure you're seeing it as it is...above the first branch is pretty good taper (for a cherry), but unfortunately, it was due to major dieback on the back side of that section of trunk. A leafless photo shows it is anything but perfectly round. Tilting the planting angle a little one way or the other will make that left side less vertical, which should also help visually.

One feature I really appreciate about yoshino cherry trees is the rough bark at the base, and the nearly birch-like bark on the younger portions. This one is showing that. The real work is going to be getting some movement and control in these wild branches!
